J. w. NASMITH COMBING MACHINE Filed Feb. 25, 1925 By His Ill/21:21:
Patented Jan- 12, 1926.
UNITED STATES JOHN,WILLIAM NASMITH, OF MANCHESTER, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO NASMITHS PATENTS LIMITED, OF MANCHESTER, ENGLAND.
COMBING MACHINE.
Application filed February 25, 1925.
To all whom may concern.
Be it known that I, J OHN W'ILLIAM Ni-is MITH, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of Heaton Mersey, Manchester, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combing Machines, of Which the following is a specification.
In British Letters Patent No. 132,987, corresponding to U. S. Patent No. i,369,532 dated Feb. 22, 1921, granted to me, there is shown a method of adjusting, along an are having a common centre with the combing cylinder, the pivot on which the nipper of a combing machine swings, and of utillzing this adjustment to regulate the approach of the nipper to the detaching roller. It is shown how each nipper can be individually adjusted and then how all may be simultaneously regulated to approach the detaching roller within any required distance, and the pivot having been brought to the de sired position it was secured there by the clamping screw 13, Figure I, aided by the screw 5 for each pivot-carrying lever.
It has been found in practice that for certain classes of work it is advantageous to give to the pivot N a slight oscillating movement along the arc r-o during each stroke of the machine.
The object of the present invention is to provide means to effect this and in order that the invention may be understood I append a sheet of drawings.
In carrying the invention into effect I substitute for the screw 5 above mentioned a screw similarly designated in the append.- cd drawing. This screws up against the framing of the machine (not shown to avoid complication) but does not clamp the lever 3 thereto, but being provided with a. broad head it holds the lever 3 near the surface of the framing and supports it, whilst leaving the slot 4 free to ride over the shank of the screw 5 which passes through the slot 4-.
Similarly I substitute for the clamping screw 13 a stud similarly designated in the appended drawing, which can be fixed at any point in the slot 12 of the graduated quadrant keyed on the shaft 10 on which Serial No. 11,535.
is also keyed the lever 9, which is connected to the lever 3 by the rod 7 with adjusting nuts 8. On the stud 13 is hinged the eccentric strap E operated by an eccentric X keyed on the cylinder shaft C. It will be obvious that all the nipper pivots N along the machine can be set individually in line with the detaching rollers D by means of the rod 7 and the nuts 8 and that as the eccentric X revolves a slight rocking movement will be imparted to each pivot N, the time of which can be regulated by any suitable adjusting means on the eccentric. By suitably displacing the position of the stud 13 in the slot 12 this rocking movement can be caused to occur at any point along the arc R-R within the limits of the slot 4.
By using a cam in place of the eccentric an irregular movement can be imparted to the stud N in place of the regular one obtained from a crank or eccentric.
I claim 1. In a combing machine wherein the pivot of the nipper in said machine is moved along an are having a common centre with the combing cylinder for the purpose of adjusting the relation of the nipper to the detaching roller of the combing machine, means for giving the said pivot a slight oscillatory motion at each stroke of the apparatus, such means comprising, a lever carrying the pivot, an arcuate sliding bearing for the said lever formed on an arc struck from the centre of the combing cylinder, and means for imparting from the cylinder shaft an oscillatory motion to the lever at each revolution of the said shaft.
2. In apparatus as claimed in claim 1, means for imparting from the cylinder shaft an oscillatory motion of the pivot carry ing lever, such means comprising an eccentric strap on the said shaft, the end of said strap being connected to a stud adjustably scour-able in a slotted quadrant borne by a shaft and a lever arm on such shaft to operate the pivot carrying lever.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
JOHN WILLIAM NASMITH.
