Be it known that l, fin/otr HiN'rnNAorr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Leather Rolling, Glazing, or Brushing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates in general tov a mechanical movement for causing a member mounted to oscillate on an axis to travel in a substantially straight path. More particularly the invention relates to a mechanical movement for actuation of a roller, glazing tool or brush in leather rolling, glazing or brushing machines of the type including a yielding table to support the leather to be operated and mechanism swinging about an axis disposed above said table to actuate the roller, glazing tool or brush over the leather on said table in a path substantially parallel to the top of said table with the Aroller exerting a pressure on said table when moving in one direction and raised above said table to clear the leather when moving in the opposite direction.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a leather rolling, glazing or brushing machine including a mechanical movement of the character described embodying novel and improved features of construction which is strong and durable, simple and inexpensive in construction and operation, and which ensures uniform and thorough rolling, glazing or brushing of leather.
Another object of the invent-ion is to provide a leather rolling, glazing' or brushing machine including a mechanical movement of this character comprising a toggle mounted at one end to oscillate on an oscillating eccentric or cam, means for oscillating said toggle on said eccentric, means for swinging the toggle members relatively to each other, and means for coordinating the oscillation of said eccentric and oscillation of said toggle and relative movements of said toggle members so 'that said free end of said toggle member travels in a substantially straight path.
Further objects are to provide such a machine of the character described including a flat leather supporting table, a shaft having an eccentric thereon operatively connected to said toggle eccentric to oscillate the same, a crank on said shaft operatively connected to one of said toggle members to cause rel- Serial No. 592,461.
ative movement of said toggle members and oscillate the toggle on said eccentric so that the free end of said toggle travels in a path parallel to said table, said toggle being adapted to carryv a roller, glazing' tool or brush to smooth, glaze or brush leather on said table. and to obtain other results and advantages as may be brought out by the following description.

A counter shaft 9 is journaled in the portion 6 of the frame transversely of and substantially parallel to the top of the leather supporting portion 7 of the table A, said shaft carrying an eccentric or cam l() on which is mounted to oscillate a toggle B. The said toggle comprises two members 11 and l2., the first-mentioned having one end journaled on the eccentric l0 and the other end pivotally connected at 13 to one end of the other member 12. The other end of said member 12 is adapted to carry a leather roller 14, glazing tool or brush, of known construction.

Thus,-as the shaft 1 is revolved, the wrist pin 16 is rotated and swings the toggle B about the eccentric 10, and at the same time the wrist pin 16 and connecting rod 15 swing the member 12 of the toggle about .its pivot 13 relatively to the'member 11 so as to vincrease the distance between the axis of the eccentric 10 and the rection and decrease said Vdistance or break the toggle when the same moves in the other direction. Vhen theV distance between the axes ofthe eccentric-110 and the rollerk 14 is increased, the toggle causes the roller 14 to exert a pressure on the port-ion lY of the table A against the influence of the springs 8,and when the said .distance is decreased the roller 14 is lifted above the table to clear the same.
Due to the oscillation of the toggle B about the axis of the eccentric 10, in order to cause the roller 14 to travel in a straight path substantially parallelto the top of the portion 7 of the table and thus exert a uniform pressure thereon, it is necessary to oscillate the eccentric 10 in order to change the relative position of the'axis of the eccentric and the axis of the roller 14; and this oscillation ofthe eccentric yminst beicoordinated with the swinging of the toggle Baby the connecting rod 15. For this purpose I may provide a crankarm 18 on the shaft- 9 and connect said crank .arm by a link 19 to an eccentric strap-20 mounted on an eccentric 21 carried by the shaft 1 to rotate therewith. The relative position of the axis of the eccentric 21 and the wrist piny 16 andthe adjustment of thefeccentr'ic 10 or crank arm l18 on the shaft 9 determines thegpathof travel of the roller 14.

certain details, ,it will be understood that this is only for the purpose of illustrating the principles of the invention and that many modifications and changes can be made in the detail construction of the device without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention` Therefore, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself except as required by the following claims when constructed in the light of the prior act.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. A machine of the character described including a frame, a movable axis member on said frame, a work supporting table, a toggle comprising two pivotally connected members, one of which is mounted to oscillate on said movable axis member and the other of which is adapted to carry a tool, means for simultaneously oscillating said toggle on said axis member and producing relative movement of said toggle members, 'and means for moving said axis member simultaneously with the oscillation of said toggle to produce longitudinal movement of the latter and cause the free end thereof to move in straight paths substantially parallel with said table.
2. A machine of the character described including a frame, a work supporting table, an eccentric mounted in said frame for oscillation, a toggle comprising two pivotally connected members, one of which is mounted to oscillate on said eccentric and the other of which is adapted to carry a tool, means for simultaneously oscillating said toggle about said eccentric and producing relative movement of said toggle members` and means for oscillating said eccentric simultaneously with the oscillation of said toggle to produce longitudinal movement of the latter, whereby the free end of said toggle is caused to move in substantially straight paths substantially parallel with said table.
3. A machine of the character described including` a frame. a yielding work support.- ing table, a movable axis member mount-ed on said frame, a toggle comprising two pivotally connected members, one of which is mounted to oscillate on said axis member over said table and the other of which is adapted to carry a tool for operating on said work, a drive shaft having a crank, a connecting rod rigidly connected to said sccond-mentioned toggle member and to said crank to simultaneously oscillate said toggle and move s'aid second-mentioned toggle member on its pivot relatively to the other toggle members, and means for moving said movable axis simultaneously with the oscillation of said toggle to cause longitudinal movement of said toggle, whereby the free end of said toggle is caused to move in substantially straight paths substantially par allel with said table.
4. A machine of the character described including a fra-me, a yielding work support ing table, a shaft having an eccentric to rotate therewith, a toggle comprising two pivot'ally connected members, one of which is mounted to oscillate on said eccentric and the other of which is adapted to carry a tool to operate on said work, means for simultaneously oscillating said toggle and producing relative movement of its members, a a drive sha-ft having an eccentric to rotate therewith, and means for connecting said drive shaft to said first-mentioned shaft to oscillate the latter simultaneously with the oscillation of said member, whereby the toggle is moved longitudinally and the free end thereof is caused to move in substantially straight paths substantially parallel with said table.
5. A machine of the character described including a frame, a yielding work supporting` table, a shaft having an eccentric to rotate therewith, a toggle comprising two pivotally connected members, one of which is mounted to oscillate on said eccentric and the other of which is adapted to carry a tool to operate on said work, a drive shaft having a crank, a connecting rod rigidly connected to said second-mentioned toggle member and to said crank to oscillate said toggle and move said second-mentioned toggle member on its pivot relatively to the other toggle member, an eccentric on said drive shaft to rotate therewith` and means for connecting said second-mentioned eccentric to said iirstmentioned shaft to oscillate the latter simultaneously with the oscillation of said toggle, whereby the toggle is moved longitudinally and the free end thereof is caused to move in substantially straight paths substanti'ally parallel with said table.
