Be it known that I, JOSEPH WATZELHAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, in the county and tate of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Producing Underlays and Overlays, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to a machine of novel construction for producing automatically, underlays and overlays, commonly termed makereadies for printing forms, the underlays being applied in known manner underneath that part of the printing form, where the impression would otherwise be too light, while overlays are applied in similar manner to the cylinder or platen of the printing press. Heretofore, these underlays and overlays were produced by hand with considerable trouble, and loss of time, while moreover, a defective product was liable to be turned out. By my invention, the operation of marking the defective portions on the proof sheet will cause a correspondingly outlined patch to be automatically out out and applied to the underlay or overlay sheet at the exact point required, so that a superior product is obtained, and time as well as labor is economized.

The machine comprises preferably, two stylos 1 and 2 which by a pantograph arrangement hereinafter referred to, are adapted to transmit their movement to a cutting tool 3 and a paste applying device 4. rlhe two stylos l and 2 together with their transmitting mechanism are of identical construction, stylo 1, however, serving to mark on the front ofa proof sheet 5, that part of the -inlmassiali- 'wliioli is defectively of stylos l and 2 pantographically to cutter 3. and paste appl-ying device 4 comprise four intergeared articulated members which are of likey 'construction so that the description of one will equally ap ly to the others. As shown, the stylo is helgd'in a tubular sleeve 8 encompassed by the outer end of a link 9 the inner end of which is, by a pin 10, so connected tol a sprocket wheel 1l that any oscillation of the link will cause a corre-` spending rotary movement of the sprocket wheel. The latter is, by chain 12,-con nected to the pin hub of a gear wheel 13 which is ,free to turn on a shaft 14' stepped in table 7.-l Between arm 9 and wheel 11, pin 10 is loosely surroilnded by the eyed outer end of an arm 15, the inner end of which is keyed to asecond gear wheel 16 that is arranged below wheel 13 and is likewise free to turn on shaft 14. The links 9 and arms l5 ofthe tools 3 and 4 are constructed in a similar manner, so that the same reference letters have been used in Figs. 8, 9 and l0. The four shafts 14 are mounted in, a common overhead bearing plate 17 and their four wheels 13 intermesh as do likewise, the four wheels 16. As thus far described, any movement of the link 9 of either stylo l or 2 will by the chain drive l2 be transmitted to the two links 9 of the cutting tool 3 and the paste applying device4. So also, any movement of the arm 15 of either stylo will be transmitted through wheels 16 tov the arms of the Vcutting tool and pastev applying device, the pins 10 thus constituting in effect, elbow joints between' links 9 and arms 15 by means of which anytigure traced by either one of the stylos will be duplicated by the cutting tool as well as by the paste applying device. The cutting tool 3 will sever a correspondingly outlined patch 18 from a web of paper 19, vwhich is fed intermittently across one leaf or platen 20 of a foldable table. The other platen 21 of this table, is hinged to platen 2() by pintle 22, and is adapted to support the body of the underlay or yoverlay sheet 23 upon which the 'proper outline of a paste field or daub 24 has' been 'formed by the movement of the paste applying device 4;.

that immediately after patch 18 and daub 24 have been formed, the two platens 20 and 21 are folded against one another, so that in this way, the patch 18, will adhere to sheet 23, and thus form an underlay or overlay, which registers in every respect with the ligure traced on the front or back of the proof sheet.
The cutter 3 while cutting out patch 18 from web 19 receives rotary movement from a. motor 25 depending from table 7, the spindle Q6 ,of the motor being by belt 27, connected to a double pulley 28 turning on shaft 14. Pulley QS by belt 29, and double pulley 30, belt 31 and pulley 32 imparts rotary movement to a tubular holder 33, carrying cutting tool 3, so that in this way, the latter receives the desired axial rotation.

The four vertical runs thus formed are located directly beneath the table hinge, so that when such runs are subjected to downward pull, the hinged inner ends of the platens will be pulled downward and the platens will thus be folded into a vertical positien'and be brought into Contact with their pper faces in the manner desired. 1n other words, the platens' are so connected at their outer ends to their chains, as to here form fulcrums, while at their inner ends, the knuckle 22 only is connected to the chains by the lugs 55. rl`hus during the movement of the chains described, the knuckle will be pulled downward, so that the platens will tilt more and more on their fulcrums between their frames 54 and also between their chains until they are finally brought into a face wise or vertical position, the outer ends of the platens, during this movement, never rising above the upper horizontal runs of the chains. l/Vhen, on the other hand, a pull is exerted on the inclined runs ofthe chains, the platens will be drawn up to resume their normal horizontal position illustrated in Fig. 3.
The means for actuating chains 50 are as follows: A moto 56 is intergeared with an eccentric 57 which imparts reciprocating movement to a pitman 5S to which a rack 59 is pivoted. This rack engages a pinion 6U fast on the shaft of one of the wheels 52, said wheel being also intergeared with its mate. Thus as the rack 59 moves to the left, wheels 52 will be so turned, as to exert a downward pull on rthe vertical runs ,of chains 50, while when r ck 59 moves to the right, wheels will be turned in the oppesite direction, te exercise a pull on the inclined runs of the chains. 1n this way, the desired folding and unfolding movement or platens 20, 21 will be effected as will be readily understood.
That portion 61 of platen @O which supports paper web 19, and underlies cutter 3, is provided with a large number of punctures, beneath which there is formed on the platen, a vacuum chamber "o2, from which the air is adapted to be exhausted by means of a rubber hose 63, leading to a suitable air suction device (not shown). valve 54 of hose 63, has a tappet 65, which is adapted to engage either one of a pair of stops 66, 67.
lhen the platen 20, is swung into its horizontal position, valve 64 will be opened by stop 66, so that the vacuum formed in chamber 52 will draw web 19 against the perforated section 61, while the cutting tool 3 is at work. After patch 18 has been severed, it will be retained in position upon the platen by suction, while the platens are folded 'toward each other, but as soon as the platens are about to come into contact, valve 64 will be opened by stop 67, to admit air to chamber 62, and thus cause platen 2U to relinquish its hold on patch 18 which will thus be free to be transferred to the paste field 24 of underlay sheet 23, supported on platen 21.
Means are provided for imparting to the paper web 19, an intermittent feed at each complete folding movement of platen 20, the length of the feed corresponding substantially to the width of the platen, so that in this way, an unmutilated portion of the web will be presented to the cutter each time the platen has resumed its normal horizontal position. Y Y
rIhe means for obtaining the intermittent feed are as follows: lVheels 51 are fast on a shaft 68 turning in frame 54 and connected by spring-controlled ratchet clutches 69 with a pair of bevel'gears 70, that mesh into wheels 71 fast on shafts 72. On each shaft 72 is fast, a pinion 73, which meshes into a pair of gear wheels 74 fast on the shafts 75 of a pair of idlers or supporting rollers 76, which are thus adapted to be simultaneously rotated in the same direction, the linear circumference of each idler corresponding substantially to the width of platen 20. Above one pair of these'idlers which are located at one side'of platen 20 is mounted, the delivery reel or roll 77 lof web 19, said reel having a core 78 engaging a forked bearing 79, the reel being in this way,
' supported by the idlers 76. The other pair feo of lidlers 76 which is located on the other lside of the platen, in like manner supports the winding 80 of the mutilated portion of web 19, said winding being'furnished with a core 81 engaging a forked bearing 82.
lVhen platens 20, 21 are folded toward each other, chains 50, will by wheels 51, so turn shaft 68, that the desired length of unmutilated web 19 is unwound from reel 77, and the mutilated portion of said web is rewound upon core 81. During the subsequent opening movement of the platens, the two members of ratchet clutches 69, will slip or come out of operative engagement, so that the movement of wheels 51 will be no longer transmitted to shafts 72 and consequently, no movement will be imparted to web 19. The construction may of course, be so modied that the web remains stationary during the closing movement of the platens, and is advanced during their opening movement.
ln order to prepare an underlay or overlay, it is customary in the art, to make an impression of the picture and of the type on a proof sheet, defective portions formed at the imprint of the picture being indicated by a line drawn around the same on the face of the sheet, while defective portions -V formed at the imprint of the type are indicated by a line drawn around the same on the back of the sheet. Y
In using the machine, a proof sheet 5 is placed in proximity to stylo V1 on table 7, in a normal positionand with its face eX- posed, while the underlay sheet 23 is placed upside down and with its back exposed on platen 21. Thus the left hand upright edge a Z of proof sheet-,15, will correspond to the left hand upright edge a Z of underlay 23, but the top line a Z) of the proof sheet will be positioned at the bottom of the underlay, the tops of both sheets thus being directed outward. As stylo 1 is by the operator guidedV over the face of sheet 5, to indicate the defective sections of thev picture imprint, cutter 3 and paste applying device 4 will be pant'ographically moved in a corresponding manner, to cut out patch 18 and simultaneously prepare paste eld 24 on back of runderlay 28, the patch 18 being held to platen 20, by vacuum chamber 62. After the markingy of the defective portion or portions has been completed, the operator starts motor 56, to carry patch 18 to the paste field 24, and thus cause the patch to be applied to sheet 28, in a position which corresponds exactly to .the marking on the front'of the proof sheet 5 as indicated at 83 Fig. 7. If the underlay requires more than a single thickness of patches, the operation is repeated,vv until sheet 23 is backed up with the required number of superimposed patches. v
Another proof sheet6 is now placed on table 7 in proximity to stylo 2, but back upward, the left edge a d of the first proof sheet being now the same as theright edge ft CZ of the second proof sheet, or in other words, saidA two corresponding edges will both be directed outward. l/Vhen now the stylo is passed over the back of proof sheet 6 so as to indicate the defective imprints obtained from the type, a corresponding movement will again be imparted to the cutter Y and the paste applying device to sever a new patch 18 from web l19 and form a new paste field 24 on sheet 23, so that when the platensV 20, 21 are again brought together, a patch corresponding to the marking of proof sheet 6 will be applied to sheet 23'as indicated at 84, Fig. 7.
It is evident from the :foregoing that dur-v Y ing the operation described, any movement of stylos 1 and 2 from line a Z toward or away from line 7) c, or any movement fromV line a Z) toward lor away from line c cl will cause a corresponding movement of the cutter and of the paste applying device, so that the patches will be placed upon theback of theV underlay in exact conformity to the fro-nt and back markings on the proof sheets.
It will be seen that with the machine constructed as described, the mere operation of marking the defective area on the proof sheet and causing the platens to fold in the manner described, Vwill automatically pro* produce an underlay Yor overlay that is adapted to correct such defectivearea. The
operation of the machine is simple, its control is easy, an accurate product is assured, and time as well as labor areeconomized.

A machine of the character described, comprising a plurality of articulated mem-v bers, each member being composed of an. arm and of a link pivoted to said arm, means for transmitting the movement of one of said arms to the other arms, separate: means for transmitting the movement of oney of said links to the other links, and a stylo a cutter and a paste applying device carried. by the links respectively.
Ll. A machine of the character described, comprising a plurality of intergeared arms, a plurality of links pivoted to said arms, chain drives that connect said links With each other, and a stylo, a cutter and a paste: applying device carried by said links re spectively.
5. A machine of the character described, comprising a plurality of intergeared articulated members, a stylo carried by one of said members, a cutter carried by another of said. members, and means for rotating said cutter..
6. A machine of the character described, comprising a plurality of intergeared articu lated members, a stylo carried by one of said members, a paste Wheel carried by another of said members, and means for simultaneously rotating and vertically reciprocating said Wheel.
7 A machine of the character described, comprising a pair of foldable platens, one of said platens being adapted to support a paper web, While the other platen is adapted to support a sheet, means for severing a patch from said Web, and means for simultaneously forming a corresponding paste field on the sheet.
8. A machine of the character described, comprising a pair of foldable platens, a cutter movable over one of said platens, a paste applying device movable over the other platen, stylo, and means for transmitting the movement of said stylo to said critter and said paste applying device.
9. A machine of the character described, comprising a pair ofl hinged platens, a suction device on one of said platens, a critter movable over said platen, a paste applying device movable over the other platen, means for folding and unfolding said platen, and means for simultaneously cutting onl or establishing suction in said suction device.

A machine of the character described, comprising a pair of hinged platens, a cutter movable over one of said platens, a paste applying device movable over the other intacta platen, drive chains depending from the platens, sprocket Wheels engaging the chains, .and means for alternately drawing said chains in opposite directions.
11. A machine of the character'described, comprising a stationary frame, a pair of platens capable of being folded one upon the other, a cutter movable over one of said platens, paper feeding means carried by said frame, means for folding and unfolding the platens, and means for actuating said paper feeding means.
12. A machine of the character described, `comprising a stationary frame, a pair of platens capable of being folded one upon the other, a cutter movable over one of said platens, paper feeding means carried by said frame, means for folding and unfolding the platens, and means actuated by said last named means for intermittently actuating said paper feeding means.
13. A machine of the character described, comprising a pair of platens capable of being folded one upon the other, drive chains depending therefrom, sprocket Wheels ein gaging the chains, means for drawing the chains alternately in opposite directions, a shaft carrying some of said sprocket Wheels, rollers adapted to support a paper roll, and means actuated by said shaft for intermittently rotating said rollers.
14. A machine of the character described, comprising a pair of platens capable of being folded one upon the other, a first pair of rollers arranged at one side of one of said platens, a second pair of rollers arranged at the other side of said platen, means for folding the platens, and means for simultaneously actuating said rollers.
15. A machine of the character described comprising a stylo, acutter and a paste aP- plying device, pantographically connected to said stylo, a pair of relatively movable platens, adapted to be projected beneath said cutter and paste applying device respectively, and means for moving said platens into facevvise contact.
16. A machine of the character described, comprising a stylo, a cutter and a paste applying device pantographically connected to said stylo, a first platen adapted to be projected beneath the critter, a suction device on said first platen, a second platen adapted to be projected beneath said paste applying device, and means for moving said platens into facevvise contact.

A machine of the character described, comprising a stylo, a cutter and a paste apn plying device pantographically connected to said stylo, a first platen adapted to be projected beneath the cutter, a paper feeding device carried by said platen, a second platen adapted to be projected beneath said4 paste applying device, and means for moving said platens into facenuse contact..

A machine of the character described, comprising a stylo, a cutter and a paste applying device pantographically connected to said stylo, a first platen adapted to be projected beneath the cutter, a paper suction device and a paper feeding device carried by said platen, a second platen adapted to be projected beneath the paste applying device7 and means for moving said platens into facewise contact.
19. A machine of the character described,
comprising a pair of stylos, a cutter and a paste applying device pantographically connected to both of said Stylos, a Vfirst platen adapted to be projected beneath the cutter, a paper suction device and a paper feeding device carried by said platen, a second platen adapted to be projected beneath the paste applying device, and means for moving said platens into facewise contact.
