Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 9, 1915.
Application filed .Tuly 12, 1915. Serial No. 39,250.
To all tvhom it may concern Be it known that I, ANDREW P. Took-ER, a citizen of the United States, residing atthe city of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Machines for Making Paper *orms, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce a machine which will rapidly make a form out of paper to be used as the body for an egg carrier, the machine doing the Work automatically and with a minimum amount of friction and producing the forms uniformly so that they will all be alike. To accomplish this I provide rolls, cutters, dies, and formers, and combine them in a simple and imique manner to produce the result desired.
The various features of the invention and their peculiar advantages, Will readily become apparent from a perusal of the following 'speoification. I
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1, is a side elevation of the machine, with a printing press attached, Fig. '2, is a side elevation of the machine, being the side opposite to the one shown in Fig. 1, with the printing press detached, part being broken away and parts in section to illustrate construction, Fig.3, is a view in elevation looking toward the forward or front part of the machine, where the paper enters. Fig. 4:, is a sectional view on line H of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow. the die carriage and its actuating parts being, however, shown elevated, Fig. -5, is a'yiew in elevation looking toward the rear part of the machine where the finished aper forin's fall out of the machine, Fig. '6, is a sectional view on the line 6-6 of Fig. '2, looking i the direction of the arrow, Fig. 7, is a plan View or the egg carrier form, flat, as it enters the final forming rolls. Fig. 8, is an end View of the egg carrier form as it a pears formed up and finished, Fig 9, is an end view of th lower rolls showing the means for stri ping the finished egg carrier hodyofi of the forming rolls, and also taken at line 9 9 ciFi-g. '5 to illustrate that ert-ct the-device which is on the frame or housing which supports the forming rolls, and Fig. 10, is a section of the former rolls, broken away to illustrate the construction by means of which the egg carrier body is embossed to form the locking means on the carrier, v
The frame Work of the machine is made up of two sides 1, 1, suitably pinned and c'onnected'together in any of the ordinary ways, the bearings for the shafts below the top of the machine,-being in these sides 1.
The driving shaft .of the machine is marked 2 and the eccentric shaft is marked 3. I also provide three gear shafts a and 5 and 6; all these shaftsexte'nd across the machine and are housed in said side frames 1.
The driving shaft '2 carries pulley 7 and a gear Wheel '8; the shaft 3 carrying the gears 9 and 10 and at each end also carrying an eccentric 1:2. A shaft 4 carries the gear Wheels 13 and 14, the shaft 5 carrying the gear Wheels 15 and 16, and the shaft 6 car'r' ing-the two gear Wheels 17 and 18. These shafts and gears are all below the top of the machine, and at the top of the machine I provide a series of brackets or housings Carrying rolls or rollers and their shafts, gears, cutting 'dies and accompanying parts.
Brackets or housings 19 carry rolls or roller's 20-20, which are mounted on shafts 22 25, which are j-ournaled in bearings 21 in the brackets 19 and are capable of being adjusted thereon; theshaft 22 also carries a gear '24 and also carries a hand wheel 23 at its opposite end. On shaft 25 I provide a gear 26.' By turning the hand Wheel 23, the gears 24 and QGare forced to mesh and this turns the rolls 20 20 to start the pa er in between them to the machine.
In brackets on housings 27, Ijournalthe shafts 2-8 and 29, carrying the rolls or rollers 30 and 31, the top roll 30 being a sector roll, as it a depressed face orcut away part or section '39, (see particularly Fig. 2); on the shaft 28 I'pro'vide a gear wheel 3-3 and the shaft he I provide the gear wheel 34, and the s rocket wheel 35. These rolls 30 and 3'1 are always feeding the paper except that when the cut away section 32 is passing the race of the other roll, the motion of the paper is'retartletl and checked momentarily,
so that the perforating die can make its descent as will be hereinafter described.
In bracket-s or housing 36 I operatively support a carriage 37 which carries the male die 38 which operates in connection with the female die 39, suitably supported in the machine, below said carriage and male die. The dies cut or perforate the paper to produce a configuration as shown in Fig. 7 where the perforations are plainly visible and the dies also score the paper as shown by the numeral 40. The die carriage 37 is operated through the agency of eccentrics 12 and eccentric arms 41; the eccentric arms 41 being connected to the eccentrics 12 at point 42 by a stud pin and at their upper extremity said eccentric arms 41 are connected to die carriage 37, in a similar or any desired manner. This eccentric arm 41, on each side of the machine can be adjusted through means of a lock nut coupling 45.
In the brackets or housings 46, I journal two shafts 47 and 48 which carry rolls or rollers 49 and 50, the upper roll 49 being a sector roll and having a depressed cut away part or section 51, (see particularly Fig. 2) the top shaft 47 having a gear wheel 52 and the shaft 48 carries a gear wheel 53 which meshes with gear 52 to turn the rolls 49 and 50. At the opposite end of the shaft 48 is another gear wheel 54, which meshes with gear wheel 18 and a sprocket wheel 55 is also present on said shaft. In the upper roll 49, I also place a severing knife 56 which cuts off the desired length of paper at the proper time so that the severed sheet can pass into the forming rolls to be hereinafter described. On these brackets 46, I also place a spray pipe or moistener 57, for dampening the paper, if desired.
A sprocket chain 58 passes over the sprockets 35 and 55, the sprocket 55 being driven by reason of gear 54 meshing with the gear 18 and thus, this chain, in passing over sprocket 35 on shaft 29 imparts motion to the'rolls 30 and 31.
I further provide large frames, brackets or housings 59 in which I mount the forming rolls 60 and 61, the roll 60 being the male and the .roll 61 the female roll; the roll 60 carrying the formers 62, which fit into the depressions 63 on the female roll, these formers and depressions being of a contour to press the cut, perforated sheet shown in Fig. 7 ,into the form shown in Fig. 8, which forms the finished egg carrier body, the female rolls 61 at each outer roll depression 63 having male and female embossing parts 91 and 92 respectively, which act in conjunction with the counter parts 95 and 96, on the outer roller parts 62 of the male roll 60, so that the locking device is formed for locking the egg carrier body when folded together. and for purposes of perspecuity I have used the numerals 91 and 92 to designate these locking parts in Figs. 7 and 8, they corre sponding to the male and female embossing parts on the roll 61, particular reference is had to Fig.10 and also to Figs. 7 and 8, for this illustration. In the present instance I provide the rolls 60 and 61 with three sets of formers and depressions around their periphery so that threeegg carrier bodies can be made in one revolution of the rolls. The rolls 60 and 61 are journaled in boxes 64 in the housings 59 and are capable of being adjusted therein.
Each of the rolls 60 and 61 are heated through the medium of gas burners 65 which are fed with gas through pipe 66, regulated through valve 67, (see particularly Fig.1). If I do not dampen the paper, I do not need to heat the rolls.
At one side the rolls 60 and 61, carry gear wheels 68 and 69, which mesh, they getting their revolution through the agency of the gear wheel 16, on shaft 5. I strip or remove the finished egg carrier body when formed, off of the rolls 60 and 61 by means of a suitable stripper mechanism, which I form. as follows, to wit: On the lower roll 61 I pivot at point 80, a lever 81, carrying at its forward end a wheel or roller 82, held in the head 83 of said lever by a shaft or pin 84. I also place a lug 85 on the side of the roll 61 on which the lever 81 rests. A coiled spring 86 extends from the lever to a pin 87 which brings the lever down to normal position.
On the frame 1, I place a peculiarly curved body or nose 88 over which the roller 82 rides. The construction just described is placed at each side of the roll 61 and at each set of the roll parts 62 of the former roll 61, so that both sides of the finished carrier body or form are operated upon simultaneously. The lever 81 and its roller 82- and connecting parts travel around with the forming roll 61 and when the roller 82 passes over the nose 88, the lever 81 is lifted or tilted upward, its finger 90 which fits in and is part of the depressed part 62 of the female former roll 61, thus is forced against the egg carrier form and pushes it up out of its position and the whole carrier form as shown in Fig. 8 is stripped off, as this initial raising of the said carrier form allows the air to pass under and lift it off; as soon as this operation is completed the lever and parts fall back to their'normal position, see Fig. 9, the spring 86, which has been placed at a tension assisting, by relaxing; as the rolls 60 and 61 are rotating this operation is taking place as each carrier form or body .is pressed and embossed.
The printing press is marked and the paper 71. I may use any kind of printing press found desirable and operate the same in conjunction with the machine so that the paper is printed upon at the proper inter vals so that reach finished egg. carrier body -will be;similarly printed when completed.
The machine operates as follows, 110 wat:
By turning the hand wheel 23, the gear wheels 24 and 26 are forced to mesh and this turns the rolls 2020 to start the :paper ,71 in between them to the machine Power is transmitted to pulley 57 '.thus revolving shaft 2 and its gear wheel 8, this gear meshing with :the gear 1 0-on eccentric shaft 3 which turns the eccentric shaft to operate the -ec centrics 12; the eccentrics operating the eccentric arms 41 which carry the die carriage 37 which holds the male die 38 and as the eccentrics 12 revolve an up and down motion is given to operate the die carriage 37 up and down and thus perforate the paper 71; the shaft 3 carries gear 9 which meshes with gear 13 on shaft 4 and this gear meshes with gear 18 on shaft 6 and the gear 18 meshes with gear 54: and said gear 5 1 on shaft l8,-
which carries the lower roll 50, meshes with gear 52 on shaft i7 which carries the upper roll 49; thus motion is imparted to these two rolls. In order to operate the rolls 30 and 31, I provide on shaft 18 a sprocket wheel 55 over which a sprocket chain 58 operates and passes over the sprocket 35 on shaft 29 which carries the roll 31, and as shaft 29 carries gear 31 this gear will mesh with the gear 33 on shaft 28 and thus turn the rolls 30 and 31. In order to turn the forming rolls 60 and 61 I provide on shaft 4: a gear 14:, directly in the rear of the'gear 13, both said gears being of the same size; which gear 14, meshes with the gear 15, which gear is directly in the rear of the gear 16, the gears 15 and 16 are both of the same size; and this gear 16 meshes with the gear 69 on the lower female forming roll 61 and turns said roll and also mesheswith the gear 61 on the upper male forming roll 60, thus imparting motion to the two forming rolls 60 and 61.
After the paper 71 has been fed into the machine through the rolls 20-20 by turning hand wheel 23, it passes under feed rolls 3031 and these rolls feed it under the dies and carriage 37, (which carries the male die), it then feeds on under feed rolls a9 and 50, and at the time the face 32 of the roll 30 is passing over the face of the roll 31, at this time there being no contact; and as the face 51 of roll 19 is at the same time passing over the face of the roll 50, at which time there also is no contact, the feeding is momentarily stopped and the carriage through the medium of the eccentrics and eccentric rods brings down the die to perforate and score the paper between it and the female die and as soon as the carriage moves upward the two sets of feed rolls just described are again in contact and the paper is fed onward; the knife 56 at this point coming down to sever the paper as it is passing into the forming was 6.0 and (61 bywhieh it is itakeaiand fonmed into the figure shown in Fig. 8;; and
just at about the time that the sheet isr-rgoing into the forming atolls it is moistened by the moistener 57. 'These;rolls;:the die carriage,
:the cuttingv knife :and :the :moistener are .all timed to operate at :the proper time rte-.carry their motions and desired operations into effect, as are also the forming rolls 60 and 6 1, which are operating weny -quickly and forming three of the egg carrier bodies or forms at every revolution, said egg carrier formsor bodies being stripped ofi at the proper moment as heretofore described, and they may be carried off on an endless apron or in any other manner, not shown. 7
It will be noted that when I perforate the sheet with the dies I also make score lines so a that the sheet will more readily take the con- From the above description it will be seen i that the improved machine for making paper forms constructed according to my inven tion is of an inexpensive and extremely simple nature and is especially well adapted for the purpose for which it is designed, and it will also be obvious from the above description'that the machine is capable of considerable modification without material departure'from the principle and spirit of the invention, and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise form and arrangement of the several parts of the'machine as herein set forth in carrying out my invention in practice.
What I claim as new and my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. In a machine for making paper forms, feed rolls and means for operating the same, feed and cutter rolls and means for operating the same, die mechanism for perforating 'means for feeding a sheet of paper through them, mechanism for perforating said paper and means for temporarily checking the feeding of the paper as it is being perforated, means for severing said paper and forming rolls for pressing the same into a same, said rotary forming rolls simultaneseries of curved half sections connected toously pressing the sheet into a form and gethef. 1 embossing the same.
