(c1. 93-63) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in machines for forming cut-outs in a continuous web passing through said machine, and for subsequently securing to said web in positions overlying said cut-outs, transparent or 4other sheet material in shapes and sizes corresponding more or less r:losely to cutout apertures themselves.
A principal object of the invention is to prol0 vide a machine of the character set forth having novel means for forming an opening in a web.
A more specific object of the invention is to providej a machine of the type described having novel'means for displacing the portion cut from the web, out of the plane of ltravel thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide a machineof the stated character having-'novel means for removing the portion eut from the web from the machine.
Another object of the invention is to provide a machine as set forthhaving novel means for applying adhesive substances to the web adjacent the aperture cut therein.
Another object of the invention is to provide mechanism for accurately positioning and securing a covering of transparent material over Y the aperture formed in the web.
Another object of the invention is to provide a4 machine of the stated character having novel means for severing predetermined lengths of a transparent web for the purpose of covering the opening formed in a second web.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, a machine made in accordance with my invention comprises the vertical side supports l and 2 suitably spaced by the transverse bars 3.
a machine as set forth having a novel feed In the present instance the continuous webv 4 of paper, or like material, is carried longitudinally through the machine by the carrier rolls 5, 6 and 7 rigidly mounted respectively upon shafts 8, 9 and 10 which are rotatably journaled in 30 the side supports 1 and 2. The shaft 8 in the present instance extends outwardly beyond the side supports 1 and 2 and is provided with the gears 1ll and 12 rigidly mounted at the extremities thereof. In a similar manner the shafts 9 and 10 are provided with gears 13 and. 14 mounted respectively at the'extremities thereof adjacent the outer face of the side support' 2. Rotation of the shaft 8 is effected preferably by means of a chain or belt 15 driven 70 by a sprocket wheel 16 arranged for rotation with the main shaft 17 of the machine and to which a source of rotative'power is applied through the larger sprocket gear 18. A The chain passes from the Wheel 16 about a similar Wheel 75 19 rigidly mounted upon a transverse stub shaft 20 rotatably journaled in the side support 1. A gear 21 is mounted on the shaft 20 adjacent the wheel '19, and arranged for rotation therewith. The gear 21 is meshedwith a similar 80- gear 22 rigidly mounted on a shaft 23 rotatably mounted in bearings in the aforementioned side supports 1 and 2 respectively. 'I'he aforesaid gear .11 in meshing with the gear 22 completes the driving connection between the shaft 8 85 and the drive or main shaft-17 effecting rotation of the said shaft 8. Rotation of the shaft 9 is effected by the gear 12 at the opposite end of the shaft 8 which meshes with an idler gear 24 in turn meshing with the gear 13 on the said 90 shaft 9. The spindle 25 on which the idler gear 24 is mounted is provided, in the present instance, with a sprocket wheel 26 having a chain 27 thereabout -subsequently passing aboutl a wheel 28 rigidly mounted on the shaft .-10 hav` 95 ing the web carrier roll 7 mounted thereon. Tension on the chain 27 is, in*` the present instance, adjusted by selectively positioning the small sprocket wheel 29 rctatably .mounted on the outwardly extending stub shaft 30. It should be noted that the gears and spindles imparting, rotation to the web carrier rolls 5, 6 and 7 respectively as described above are of the same diameter andY effect proper timing for the advancement of the web 4 through the 105 machine. l

In the present instance the cutting of the blank of material from .the web 4 and the dis.-
placing thereof y from the plane of travel of said web by the plunger 38 are so timed in conunction with the cam disks 53 and 58 that the gripping of the blank vby the fingers 46 takes place simultaneously with the depressing of said blank below the web 4, thecarrying of the cut out portion about the roll 5 and the subsequent releasingthereof by tripping the fingers 46 taking place successively after said fingers have gripped the: blank. With the release of the material cut from the web 4 by the tripping of the fingers 46 through the rocking of the arm 50, the material is4 carried by a chute 59 outwardly-of the machine.
A plurality of idler rollers 60 are rotatably mounted upon a rod 61 and abet the movement of the blank out from the web 4 about the roll 5, the pressure of the rollers 60 against the roll 5being eifected by means of a spring 62 acting through the rocker arm 63 which is pivoted about a vrod 64 disposed transversely of the machine.

The roller 95 and'shaft 96 are rotated by a chain 99 which passes from a wheel 100 on the main shaft 17 of the machine about the Wheel 101 mounted at one extremity of the shaft 98, the said chain in a similarmanner passing about the wheels 102 and 103 respectively mounted upon the shafts 104 and 105. A gear 103a is mounted at the end of the shaft 105 adjacent the support 2 and arranged for rotation therewith, the said gear 1038' meshing with gear 14 mounted on the shaft 10. I'he arrangement described above tends to act as a' balancer or connection intermediate the mechanism driven by the chain 15 and that driven by the chain 99 to more eiliciently time the operation of the machine.
'Ihe severed section of transparent material is projected downwardly of the machine to a platen 106, and is maintained in flat relation thereon by the spaced rods 107. The section of the transparent material is then positioned upon the web 4 which is .held in contact with-the roller 7 by the idler rollers 108 rotatably mounted upon the shaft 109 supported intermediate the rocker armsA 110, 110 pivotally mounted on a rod 111, the said arms 110,'110 secured at their opposite ends to a transverse support 112a on the machine by a spring member 112, the said spring acting through the rocker arms 110 to effect a contact of suicient pressure of the idler.

The length of the material which is severed from the continuous web 77 and placed in overlying relation with the opening 37 in the web 4 is adhered thereto by the adhesive material deposited adjacent the edges of the opening by the segmental rectangular section 69, sucient pressure being applied to the severed section of the web 77 overlying the openings 37 in the web .4 by,
the roller 113 to press the said transparent section into contact with the web 4 during passage, beneath the roller -113 whichis rotatably mounted on a shaft 114 supported in one arm o'f the rocker arm 115. 'I'he other branch of thearms 115 is connected by means of a rod 116 to a lever 117 pivotally mounted about the rod 118 having a cam roller 119 rotatably mounted thereon and arranged for rolling contact with the peripheral contour of a cam disk120 rigidly mounted upon the main shaft 17 of the machine, the said lever 117, in the present instance, being actuated against the action of a spring 121 secured intermediate-the outer extremity of said lever 117 and a rod 122 projecting inwardly of the side wall 2 of the machine.
It should be noted that the roller 113 pressing against the transparent section disposed over the opening 37 in the web `4 is formed in a plurality of sections, spaced longitudinally for the purposeof permitting the contact of the said roller with the transparent material about the rods 107 which overlie the platen 106 for the purpose of maintaining. the transparent section in place thereon.
In..the present instance to eect the accuratel cutting of the webs 4 and 77 respectively, I provide the shafts 32 and 23, having the cutting tools mounted thereon, with novel means for `regulation of the contact pressure of the said the web 4 through the machine and the feeding of the transparent web 77 are suitably timed in conjunction with the operations performed during travel of said webs as to produce finished product which is a substantial improvement over products of similar character produced heretofore, the feed rolls for said web 77 being driven by. suitable gear trains connected in any suitable manner to the main drive system of the machine. Y
While I have disclosed the detail construction of my invention, I do not wish to be limited thereto except as recited in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a machine, the combination with means for cutting openings in a traveling web at intervals along the course thereof corresponding to the contour of a Window opening, a cam-operated plunger associated with said cutting means displacing the blank, .defined by the cuttingy means, out of the plane of travel ofthe web, and means at the opposite side of said web from the displacing means and intermittentlyy movable toward and away from the web in timed relation with said displacing means for gripping the .blank and carrying said blank outwardly of the machine. y
2. In a machine, the combination with means for cutting openings in a traveling web at intervals along the course thereof corresponding to the contour of a window opening, means associated with said cutting means displacing the blank, dened by the cutting means, out of the plane of travel of the web, and pivotally mounted blank, defined by the cutting means, out of the plane of travel of the web, and reciprocating fingers operating in timed relation with said displacing means for gripping the blank carrying the same outwardly of the machine and subsequently releasing said blank.
4. In a machine, the combination with means for cutting openings in a traveling web at intervals along the course thereof corresponding tdthe contour of a window opening, means aslas fsociaied with said cutting means displacing thel blank, dened by the cutting means, out of the plane" of travel of said web, means intermittently movable toward and away from the web in timed' i relation with said displacing means for gripping of .transparent material on the web overlyingsaid opening and pressing said material to yadhere to said web. 1
5. In amachine, the combination'with means for cutting openings in a traveling web at intervals along the course thereof corresponding to the contour of a window opening, means associated with said cutting means displacing the blank, defined by the cutting means, out of the plane of travel of the web, pivoted means reciprocable toward and away from said web in timed relation with said displacing means for gripping the blank and carrying said blank outwardly of the machine, means depositing ad hesive material on the web adjacent the contour of the opening, and means positioning a length of transparent material lon the web overlying said opening and pressingsaid material to adhere to said web, said latter two means acting in timed relation with said cutting and removingV means.
6. In a machine, the combination with means for cutting openings in a traveling web at intervals along the courseythereof corresponding to 4the contour of a window opening, means associated with said cutting means displacing the blank, defined by the cutting means, out of the plane of travel of the web, pivoted means reciprocable toward and away from said web in timed relation, with'saiddisplacing means' for carrying the blankoutwardly of the machine and subsequently releasing said blank, means depositing adhesive material on the web adj-acent -the contour of the opening," and m'eans positioning a length of transparent material on the weboverlying said opening and pressing said material to adhere to said web, lsaid latter two means acting in timed relation with said cutting and removing means.
7. In a machine, .the combination with means for lcutting openings in a traveling web at intervals along the course thereof corresponding associated with said cutting means displacing the blank, dened by the cutting means, out of the plane of travel of said web, pivotally mounted fingers reciprocable toward and away from the web in'. timed relation with said displacing means for gripping `the blank and carrying the blank outwardly of the machiname'ans operative to pivot said fingers and release said blank means depositing adhesive material on the web `to the contour of awindow opening, means soA adjacent the contour of the opening, and means positioning a length of transparent material on the web overlying said opening and pressing said material to adhere to said web, said latter two means acting in timed relation with said cutting and removing means.
8. In a machine, the combination with a pair of opposed cylindrical rolls, of means mountedA onYl` one of said` rolls for cutting apertures at intervals along the course of a web traveling between said rolls, means associated with said cutting means for displacing the blank dened thereby out of the plane of travel of the web,
and means movable circumferentially of the' other roll to grip the blank cut from the web and carry the same outwardly of the machine.
9. In a machine, the combination with a pair of opposed cylindrical rolls, of means mounted on one-of said rolls for cutting apertures at intervals along the course of a web traveling between said rolls, means associated with said cutting means for displacing the blank defined thereby out of the plane of trave1of the Web,
