Application filed November 11.1.-, w23.- $5era No, 674;?09.
To all t0/1.0m it may concern.'
Be 1t known that I, IIAimYTUNsTALL, a subject ot George V, King of England, and
a resident ot Fair Haven, in the county oi? Bristol and State ot Massachusetts, have in` vented a new and` useful Improvement in Combing Machines, ot which the following is a specification. y In United States Letters Patent No. 1.351 076, issued to me, and No. 1,416,95L issued to Joseph Fessel, there are described certain improvements on the well .knownlleilman comber. In my Letters vPatent No. lLO'TG there are shown top combs each having a horizontal movement with mea-ns for moving it horizontally. I have found after considerable study that the top comb mounting and the adjustable means for operating the top comb may be simpliiied in various way, one oi which is below described.
p ll/lyinvention willbe understood by retorence to the drawings `in which it. is 'shown in its preferred form as applied to a double# sided machine like that of my said` patent. Figure l is an elevation partly in section ol so much ot a double headed machine ot the type shown in my said patent as relates to my present invention, this view corresponding somewhat to Fig. 3 of my said patent and showing also a portion of the machine of the said F ossel patent.` y Fig. 2 is a plan thereof, the middle portion ot one the heads being broken away, thus omitting the nipper frames, etc.
Fig. 3 is a sideelevation of the driving end of the mechanism.
Fig. 4 is a detail showing the adjustment ofthe top comb moving link.
` Figj is a detail taken at right angles `to Fig. 4;, showing also the top comb an connection, and f Fig. 6 isa detailsimilar `to Fig. 4, of the top comb adjustment. 2
In these views certain of `the reference characters of the said patents are used so that the location otmy present;improve` ment on the-original machine may be easily seen. In my said` patent the top combs were operated from the crank disklO on shaft 8 and, shafts 103. Inthepresent case they areoperated bythe pendulum 12 whichrocks the shaft land torthis purpose is forked as at 12a and is connected to a crank disk ,9 on" shaft 8 by means substantially like thatshown in the said Fessel patent, so
that the pendulum l2 and the shalt 13 may be given a lateralswinging or oseillating movement whichshall equal in point et time andextent in each direction.
The Fessel arrangement for swl pendulum l2 comprises a carriage t sleeves al ruiming on rods l havin block D2 iiith hole through 'it in which lies a crank pin l0. ln a housing Qnon crank lr r 9 is mounted a block l0 through which .sl iis crank pin 'lO passes, and au adjusting 'row lll passing through the outerwall oit the cranfl pendulu .1. The forked end 19.@ oir thependuluin `l2 straddles a block e1` which is pivotally mounten in the car* l) so as `to turn slightly as requiredby the swinging movementsv 'oi' the pendulum. lIhe rotation ot the crank disk 9 causes the reciprocation ot the carriage I) and hence theswinging ot the pendulum l2. i p Un the shaft I3 is mounted the plate llltast thereto, while the upper end of the pen dulum l2 is loose on the shaft I3 and is adH justably held in place with relation to thc shaft 'I3 and ,plate llby screwslwhich pass through lugs in the plate land engage the edges of the pendulum l2 which are shaped for the purpose as lescrihed in said patents. i
'Ihe plate 14. is pr Yvided with a slot 141. and a bolt 121 projects tluough theslot lll-l and carries a nut by which the plate and pendulum are securely vfastenerfl together when the proper adjustment has been made by the screws l5.
In describing the operations of the top comb it will beunderstood that in a doublesided machine as is shown in Fig. l .the parts are duplicated on the two sides of the machine `and are operated in turn (as are the nipper trames) by the pendulum as it swings first in one direction and then in the other. Ast-he parts are identical. a descrip tion ot the parts on one side only eta vertlcal line throught-he pendulum shaft I3 will be necessary.
The pendulum shaft 13 carries a number of arms 36 each carrying a bowl 37to operate the nipper trames as `shown in Fig. `l5 of my said patent. In my present invention 4- .ng die Y mounted in sup-v ports l2 on the trame rl. Vertical ways D1. mounted on .said carriage `carry aV slidable there are a series of bowls 37, as in my said patent.A On each rookable shaft 29 are carried arms 32 in line to be struck by these bowls. To secure uniformity of action in the case of a machine having a number oi heads, there may be a number of arms 3; and 36 located alongv the machine. say one or more for each head.
To the bottom of each arm 32 pivoted a link ,140 the outer end of which is pivotally secured to an arm 141y mounted looselj-.f1 on the stub Vshaft 142. Fast on the shaft 142 is a collar 143 carryino a plate 144 having lugs 145 through which pass screws 146. these screws beine; in line with the edite of the arm 141 so that as an arm 141 is caused to rock by the arm 32 and the link 140 the plate 144 will be moved because it is clamped to it by the screws 146, and will oscillate the shaft 142. The plate 144 is. provided with a slot 147 and a bolt 148 passes through the arm 141 and the slot 147 to clamp the plate 144 and Iarm 141 together when their proper relationf'has been established in the primary adjustment of the machine b v the screws 146. In 1 these scizews shown in 'clamping` position: in ll 4. the positionof these screws is shown prior to the preliminary adjustment of the machine.
On the stub shaft142 are also mounted arms 151,*one at each side of the head. Between, each pair of arms 151 a top comb carrier 152 is mounted', the top comb 4S beiim` mounted between these carriers. There is a slotted adjustablev connection between the parts151 and1`52 to be used in the primary adjustmentof the machine. Itwill be seen.v thatl the reciprocation of the links 140 will by thismeans cause the roc-king of thesh'aft 142 andl hence the reciprocation the top comb carrier 152 andthe top comb. and that as the rockable arms 141 are loose on the shafts 142. the throw of the top combunay be adjusted by adjustins the position of the plates 144 about the shafts 142. The screw 149, which l passes through the lujo 1 5() (see Fie'. 4), acts as .a safetydevice to, limit the movement of the system in case of any accident, for example, the breakage of the spring l323v which is shownA in mv said patent as holding together the arms- 32 thereof and whiclrcooperates with the screws and stop 642 to limit their swine'. wWhere this mechanism is used on a double-sided comber this 7arrangement is desirable because it utilizes but one springv to control the parts on both sides of the machine, I-'f the mechanism is 'used on a single-sided comber onel end of the spring' may be attached to theifriamc. the other end being attached to the arm 32.
The frontv'endfofv each arm offthe top comb carrier 152 overhangrs the top comb and rests upon a roller 153' which supports then so that they will move in a horizontal line.
rllhe comb 48 is adjustablj" mounted at each end on an arm ofthe carrier 152.y 'F or this purpose it is attached to links 155. one f each end, which are pivoted to these ai i at 154. The rear ends of these links are adjustably connected, by a slot and bolt connection. to the arms. 'lhese parts are -rfii so proportioneel that asin my said patent the top comb will have a proper relation with the fluted rolls 83 and 84 as indicated in Fig. 1, and in view of the minuteness of the fibre and the necessity for4 absolute accuracyv in the arrangement and movements of thr parts the various adjustments above do scribed are found very desirable. Other means of adjustably connecting` the various parts may be adopted. if.- desired. but the above construction has been found in practice very satisfactory. Such adjustment is, desirable to control the amount of waste removed andfor other purposes as will occur to those skilled in the art,
It will be seen from the foregoingr description that my invention relates toa means ofy operating' a top comb and it is so claimed. lhile it is Shown as applied to the 'double comber of my patent, it isdoperable equilljY well in a single-sidedy comber having' means for rocking` the shaft 29 or otherwise yQivinslr the proper movements totheparts referred to inthe claims in connection with means for git/ing to the arms 32 the necessariY swinging motion, which armsalso Operate the iiipper mechanism as shown in my said Patent.
Itl will also be noted that as described in my said patent thesearms 32. and hence both the nipper frames and the top combs. havein fact a dwell whilein their rearward position. that is. they swine back until the screws 321 engagel the stop 642. these screws and stops serving to adjust the rearward position of the nipper frames and in this case the top comb as well,v while allowing' the nipper frames and top comb'on the other side of the machine to perform their operations while the rstuiamednippers and top comb are stationary. rllhe operation of the top comb therefore from the arm 32. which causes in this case the swineine of the nippers, gives to these two parts a coordination in their movements which has been found extremely important.
That I claim as my invention is 1. In a machine of the kind described having detaching rolls. a rockable shaft. a top comb frame and means for supportingT said top comb frame'whereby it may be moved horizontally, and connections between said rockable shaft and said frame comprising a rocker arm mounted on saidv rockable shaft and adjustable connections between said rocker arm and said frame whereby the throw of said frame may be adjusted and said.y frame willbe given an intermittent reing rolls.
2. In a machine of the kind described having detaching rolls. a rockableshat't` a ciprocation towards and from said detach--l horizontally-mov-able top comb :trame and.`
`trame may be adjusted, and means for adjustably limiting the rearward throw of said iframe.
