INTERLACINGi-VMAGHINE.
interlacing machines for fibrous material,-
particularly adapted, though not necessarily limited in its use, for curled horse hair.
- Heretofore with machines of this character considerable diiiculty and inconvenience has been experienced in feeding the material to the needles in that the bat of material will be of uneven thickness, that is to say the bat will contain thin spots which are not always visible while the material is being fed, resulting in an uneven pad after the interlacing operation.
To overcome these difficultiesv and objections and to provide improved means 1pmbodying a transparent support across w ich the material is fed and having illuminating means such as lights arranged beneath the support and visible therethrough, so as to p expose the weak or thin portions of the bat,
to enable the operator to fill in the thin spots during the feeding operation, is one of the objects of the present invention.
A further obj ect isto provide an improved machine of this character having means for uniformly feeding the entire supply'of majserial to the needles and embodying means or supp y from being disintegrated or separated from the supply, with the result that a more rapid production and greater output will be obtained, and also `rendering it possible to finish a complete pad in one operation, which pad will be ofn a' uniform thickness.
A further object is to provide an improved machine of this character embodying a .plurality of needles connected with an adjustabiy mounted support, and which support and needles are adapted to be readily detached or removed from the machine without disreventing the forward portion of they Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug.J 30,v 19211 VApplication led April 28, 1919. Serial No. 293,346.
machine of this character having means for feeding a sheet of backing material to the needle and to which backing the fibrous material is secured by the interlacing operation, the backing serving as a support upon which the fibrous material is carried to the needle, and improved means for -maintaining the backing material against twisting or wrinkling during the feeding operation thereof.
To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty n substantially the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings illustrating this invention, and in which: l
Figure 1 is a view in elevation as taken fromr the right hand side of a machine of this character constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view as taken on line 2 2, Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional vview taken on line 3 3, Fig. 4.
Fig. 4 is a detail view in elevation of the left hand side of the machine.
Fig. 5 is a detail vertical sectional view taken on line 5 5, Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 is a view partly in vertical sectiony erating pawl. f
Fi s. 13 and 14 are' cross-sections taken on F1g.11, lines 13 13 and 14`-14, respectively.
Referring. more particularly to the drawings, the machine consists primarily of spaced supports 15 of any desired size and configuration and mounted upon the sup ports'iare uprights 16 which carry a superstructtlre embodying a frame having side members 17 and a connecting member 18 ex- .-L
tending across the top of the members 17. Additional supports 19 areprovlded which are spaced from the support and the supports 15 and19 are connected by side members 20, all combined to construct a frame of any desired size. The side bars or mem- 5 bers 20 constitute a portion of the support arated and supported by cross members 22A arranged between the side vmembers 20.V lhe 15 support thus formed may be of any des1red length.
Arranged at the forward end of the machine and adjacent the support 21 is a feed roller 23 journaled in suitable bearings .with
its axis below the support and with its periphery substantially flush with the top of the support 21 so as to assist in feeding the material across the support. At the rear of the support is another feed roller 24` which 25 coperates with the feed roller 23 to feed the smaterial and arranged beneath the support are lamps 25 suitably spaced and so arranged that they will be visible throughthe transparent support. With this arrangement it will be manifest that as the material 26 is being fed across the support thc light from the lamps 25 will be visible through the thin portions of the bat of the material, thereby enabling the operator to fill in the thin spaces in the bat before they reach the interlacing needles. This will insure a bat of uniform thickness.
At the forward end of the support and in proximity to the feeding roll 23, and jour naled in bearings 17a mounted in openings 17b in the side members 17 of the frame and in a position to receive the material from the support are rollers between which the material passes. These rollers are preferably constructed of a plurality of laterally spaced disks 27, 28 secured respectively to shafts 29, 30 to rotate with the shafts. The shafts 29, 30 are 'preferably arranged out of -alinement, that is with the diametric centers of the shafts displaced laterally with respect to each other for a purpose to be hereinafter set forth, and the peripheries'of, the disks 27, 28 together with the peripheries of the feed rolls 23-24 are preferably roughened or knurled so as t0 insure a gripping of the material by' the rolls and disks and prevent relative slipping and at the same time also prevent the material from adheringto the rolls.
The bearings .17L are adjustable in the openings 17b by adjusting devices 17c such as screws, and clamping screws 17d may be provided for holding the bearings in their adjustedl positions. l
Arranged also at the front of the machine and in advance of the disks 27, 28 and f journaled in the side members 17 of the frame are additional feed rolls 31-32 spaced so that the material 26 will pass therebetween and these rolls assist in feeding the material through the machine. Adjustable .bearings 31n movable in opening 31b are pro-l vided for the roll 31, and are adjustable by the adjusting screws 310, and may be secured in their adjusted positions by the screws 31d.
Motion may be imparted to the rolls and disks in any suitable manner but preferablyr in the following manner. Brackets 33 are provided which are adapted to reciprocate upon the uprights or standards 16, and these brackets are connected for simultaneous reciprocation by means of a connecting bar 34 which constitutes a support for the needles, to be hereinafter described. Journaled in the frame 15 is a shaft 35 which extends thereacross and this shaft is given a rotary motion in any desired or suitable manner and is provided with a fly wheel 36. Secured to the shaft 35 at any convenient points are spaced' eccentrics 37 with which eccentrics straps 38 coperate and these straps are connected by means of the bars 29 with the support 34 so that as the shaft 35- is rotated the support 34 and brackets 33 will be given a reciprocatory movement upon the standards 16. Connected with the shaft 30 on the left hand side of the ma. chine and outside of the frameis a gear wheel 40 and a similar gear wheel 41 is connected withthe feed roller 32, an intermediate gear 42 beingprovided between the gears 40 and 41 to cause the feed roll 32 and disks 28 to rotate in unison and in the same direction. A ratchet gear 43 is connected with the gear 42 to rotate therewith and a pawl 44 is provided for operating the ratchet gear 43. This is accomplished by mounting the pawl 44 upon an upright 45 and which upright is adjustably mounted in one of the brackets 33, a spring being provided for maintaining the pawl 44 in operative position with respect -to the ratchet 43 so that when the bracket 33 is reciprocated it will be manifest that during the upward movement thereof the pawl 44 rwill ride over the teeth of the ratchet `43, but when the bracket 33 is moving in the opposite or downward direction the pawl will engage the teeth of the ratchetto rotate the disks 28 and the feed roll 32. A similar mechanism is provided for o erating the upper series of disks 27 and fee roll 31 but the operating mechanism therefor is preferably arranged on the opposite side of the machine and embodies gears 46-47 connected respectively to rotate with the disks 27 and feed roll 31, with an intermediate gear 48 between theI gears v1ML-.47. A ratchet gear .49 is connected to the gear 48 to rotate therewith and a pawl 50 is connected with a reciprocating support 51v for operating the` ratchet ed upon a support or plate 49a connected to` move with the adjustable V.bearings i7a and 31a. The pawl 50 is controlled by a spring 52 similar to the spring which controls thel l pawl 44. By thus adjustably mounting the supports 45-51 it will be manifest that the extent of movement ,of the rolls under the operation of the pawls may be varied.
This extent of movement may also be varied in another manner such as by providing an extension 53 on the pawl which eX- tends to the opposite'side of the pivot and coperating with this extension is an adjustable stop device 54 for limiting the movement of the pawl in one direction. Thus it will be seen that when the stop 54 is adjusted, the movement of the pawl about its pivot will be controlled or`limited by the engagement of the extension with the stop.
he interlacing operation accomplished by means of interlacing needles 55, the bill 56 of the needle being deflected laterally beyond the plane of the body of the needle so as to insure the engagement with the fiber. The needle is mounted or detachably secured to a needle bar 57 preferably so as to be detached therefrom and to that end the needle bar is provided with a recess 58 opening through one end-and which recess is eccentrically Amounted, that is, to one side of the diametric center of the end of the needle bar and into which recess the end of the needle is inserted and is held in position by means of a fastenin device 59 such as a screw, the end of which is adapted to enter a recess 60 in the needle so as to correctly position the needle with respect to the needle bar. These needles are all secured to the support 34 so as to be detached therefrom and to that end the support 34 is provided with a series of recesses 6l opening through the top thereof, and the needle bar is provided with a recess 62 in one face adapted to receive the end of a fastening device or screw 63. With this construction of needle and needle `bar itwlll be manifest'that by theprovision of the recesses GQ and 62- to gether with the 'fastening 'devices 59-63 coperating therewith, it will be impossible to place the needle and needle bar in the machine in an incorrect position and will always -insure the proper positioning of the needle. c i
As before stated the support 34 is detachably connected with the brackets 33. This may. be accomplished in any suitable manner but preferably by means of fastening devices 64 such as screws which pass through suitable slots 65 in the support 34 and engage the respective brackets 33. Thus it will be manifest that inasmuch as the support 34 with the needles and needle bars connected therewith are detachably secured vin position, and as the support 34 together with the fastening devices 64 are always accessible, the whole support 34 with the needles may be readily detached yand removed from the machine to permit the repairor insertion or removal of the needles 66 in the form of screws which are located,
at a point to be readily accessible.
Motion may be imparted to the feed` rolls 23-24 in any suitable manner but preferably from the disks 28 by means of a beveled gear 67 secured to the shaft 30 and preferably on the outside of the frame. Meshing with this beveled gear 67 is another gear 68 carried by a shaft 69 mounted in suitable-` bearings and which shaft extends along one side of the machine. Connected with the shaft 69 to rotate therewith is a beveled gear 7l meshing with a beveled gear 72 to rotate with the feed roll 23. Another beveled gear 73 is connected with the shaft 69 and meshes with the beveled gear 74 con'- nected with the feed roll 24. Thus, when the disks 28 are rotated a simultaneous and uniform rotation will he imparted to the feed rolls 23--24.
Mounted upon theI supporting structure in a convenient position and so as to hold aroll of backing material 75 beneath the frame and out of the way, are suitable the support 21, and through the interlacing mechanism. This backin may be constructed of any suitable flexile material and is provided in the event that 1t is desired to secure a pad to avbacking.s When employed, the backing forms a support upon which the material 26 is placed and carried forward. In order to insure the proper feeding of the backing, an additional rollen 77 is provided at the rear of the machine and adjacent the roll 24. The periphery of this roller 77 may also be roughened or knurled and is of a length substantially equal to the length of the roll 24 and between which rolls 24 and 77, the backing material passes. The roll 77 is mounted eccentrically in bearings 7 8 and connected with which bearings is a yoke 79 which operates as a handle to move the roll 77 bodily away from the roll when the yoke 79 is in an upright position as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 but when' the oke is in the full line position shown in ig. l, the roll 77 will be moved toward the roll 24 to grip the backing 75 and the weight of the yoke is sufficient to hold the roller 77 under tension with respect to the backing to insure a gripping operation.
This roll 77 is given its motion from the shaft 69 through the medium of a beveled gear 80 on the shaft which meshes with the beveled gear 81 connected with the roll 77. When the roll 77 is moved into an inoperative relation with respect to the roll 24, that is when the yoke 79 is in the dotted line position of Fig. 1 the beveled gear 81 will be moved out of operative .relation with the beveled gear 80.
With this improved construction it will be vmanifest that the material will be given a of a fabric and it is ofcourse understood that the belt is of such a texture that it will be ytransparent to such an extent that the lights will be visible therethrough.
It will also'bemanifest that by the provision of the roll 24, which coperates with the roll 23, the material will be fed uniformly and will be given a feeding movement throughout substantially the entire area of the material being fed. This is particularly advantageous because the.' material may be fed across the support 21 without the use of the backing or the belt 82, and in that event the material will be given its feeding movement by the rolls in the interlacing portion of the machine with which coperate the rolls 23-24, thereby obviating the danger of disintegrating or separating the forward portion of the material from the remaining portion as would be theA case if the material was advanced solely by the rolls'adjacent the needles. By applying a feedingmovement or a power at the rear of the supply, it will be manifest that this separation will be obviated and the material will be advanced uniformly over the support.
In the event that it is desired to construct the pads of different widths, there may be provided a guide 8l (shown in Fig. 10) which is adapted to be placed upon the support 20 and extends `lengthwise of the support. By the provision of the adjustable bearings 17a and 31, it will be manifest that the disk rolls 27 and the feed roll 31 may be adjusted respectively with relation tol the disk rolls 28 and feed roll 32 to vary the thickness of the pad, and in order that the ratchet mechanism of the upper rolls may 4be maintained in operative relation during such adjustment, a supporting plate 49a is provided which is connected for adjustment with the bearings.
In the event that it is desired to construct a machine of this character for manufacturing pads of considerable Width, it isneces-A sary to increase the width of the machine and this will in turn increase the length of the shafts upon which the disks 27 and 28 are connected, wit-h the result that there might be a tendency of the shafts to have a springing action. In order therefore to) maintain these shafts against such action, suitable braces may be provided such asl a support 82 which is adjustably connected by means of vscrew threads 83 to a transverse bar or support 84, which in turn is connected with the main supporting structure 15 and located below the needle bar support 34. A fastening nut 85 may be provided for holding the support 82 in position. This support 82 is threaded into the support 84 and is preferably provided withia yoke 86 at the top thereof having a pivoted or swivel connection with the support 82 at 87 to allow the yoke 86 to assume a proper position with respect to the shaft 28a' and permit the adjustment of the support 82. Thus the shaft 28a upon which the disks 28 are mounted will have a bearing in the yoke and will be braced against springing action. A somewhat similar brace may be provided for the shaft 27 to which the disks 27 are secured. This latter brace comprises a yoke 88 having a threaded stem 89, the latter being threaded in a bracket 90 secured to the cross bar 18 and a fastening nut 91 may be provided if desired upon the threaded end of the stem 89. The yoke 88 is swiveled to the stem 89 in the same manner that the yoke 86 is swiveled to the brace 82.
It will thus be seen that these braces will hold the shafts in proper position and against a springing action.
By offsetting the shafts 29-30 of the disks 27-28 laterally with respect to each other, it is possible to arrange the needles 55 and needle bars 57 so as to operate in close proximity to the rshaft 30 and between the disks 28. This arrangement will also permit the arrangement of the needles 55 so that the points thereof will be in substantially a direct line with the axis of the shaft 29, so that the disks 27 `fwill form a rest against which the material engages during the interlacing operation and prevent the pad from becoming distorted.
