Be it known that I, JOHAN WILLIAM NAsMrrH, a subject of the King ofV Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of Heaton Mersey, ,Manchesten England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combing machines and comprises an improvement in means already described by me in the specification to prior Letters Patents \lo.1,166,846 and 1,473,197. In that specification and in the drawings thereto annexed there is shown an arrangement whereby a given quantity of material is fed to the detaching rollers and, when detaching is completed, part of the fed material is withdrawn from behind the top comb into the nipper before the latter closes. In this already patented arrangement the feed apparatus is either a secondary or feed nipper which first feeds and then drawsback part of the feed before the nipper closes, or it is a reciprocating roller or rollers having the same object. The object of the lpresent invention is a feed apparatus which, whilst fulfilling the functions of the arrangement briefly referred to above, will be easily applicable to all combing machines and will be of greatly simplified construction and operation.
The invention will now be fully kdescribed in the forms best known to me, with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section showing the apparatus; and Figures 2 and 3 are fragmentary details, in sectional Y' elevation, of a modification.
In Fig-ure 1 feed rollers F F1 are shown.
The lap of material being treated is shown at L, being fed forward by the rollers F F1.
The top roller F1 is` positioned by a bearing E which pivots on a stud 16 and is pressed down upon the lower roller F pressure in any known manner. Upon each side of the bearing block E is formed a projection J which is bored and tapped for the reception of a set screw S. A pair of cranked arms A are pivoted upon a stud O and on this same stud are alsov pivoted a second pair of cranked arms 1W which carry a blade B secured to the free ends of such arms by screws S as shown. D are the detaching rollers, T the top comb and P, P2 the upper and lower nipper jaws. vWhen the nipper jaw P2 as shown is at its nearest point to the detaching rollers the lap L is drawn straight from the feed rollers F F1 to the top comb T by the rotation of the detaching rollers D. When the nipper swings away from the rollers D the arms M have angular motion around their pivot point O and the blade B descends and depresses -the length of lap YL to the posi-` tion shown in dottedlines in Fig. 1, (the feed rollers F F1 having stopped and conceding no further material), the nipper P then closing down upon the nipper P2. By adjusting the screw S vthe limit of angular traverse of the arms M will be varied owing to the abutment of the ledges G against the ends of said screws, thus regulating the angle to which the lap L is depressed by the blade B, with consequent regulation of the quantity of material drawn back thereby from the top comb T.
In Figure 1 the lap is always at an angle to the horizontal ,during the feed forward. As shown in the fragmentary sections in Figures 2 and 3 the lap L may be fed forward by a roller F and the nipper P2 in a horizontal line, and a recess R provided in the said nipper jaw, theblade B and its operative accessories being provided as before. In Figure 2 the position of thelap and of blade B is shown at the conclusion of the feed stroke, in Figure 3 the blade B has reached the lowest point in its downward stroke and has depressed the lap L into the recess R. By adjusting the screws S as previously described the quantity of mate,-`
of material to withdraw within the nipper jaws a portion of the projecting tutt of material, and means for limiting the traverse of the blade.
2. In a combing machine having the features claimed in claim l, means for depressingl the blade for withdrawal of material within the nipper, such means comprising arms on which the blade is borne, Such arms having angular motion around a pivot.
3. In a combing machine having the features claimed in claim l, a blade and a pair of nipper jaws the lower of which is provided with a recess into which the lap of material may be depressed by the descending blade.
4. In a combing machine having the features claimed in claim 1, means for regulating the extent of traverse of the blade, such means comprisingadjustable screws mounted in the path of members carrying the blade.,
