Abstract

478,531. Combing-machines. BRISCOE, J. Oct. 5, 1936, No. 26910. [Class 120 (i)] In a Heilmann combing-machine, the front detaching roller 15 is reciprocated independently of all the other rollers upon the fluted segment 18 towards and away from the top comb 22 in such a manner that the rear portion of the tuft of fibres is drawn through the top comb in progressive sequence by nipping the most projecting fibres first, and those projecting a lesser distance after, as the roller 15 advances to the comb, thereby allowing a high speed of rotation to be given to the other rollers 16, 17 which clo not reciprocate along the fluted segment with the roller 15. The roller 15 is reciprocated by two hooped links 13 and when not in contact with the segment 18 is supported by two arms 12 pivoted on the lifter shaft 3 and supported by an adjustable stop 20 on the nipper connecting-rod 21. The shaft 3 is oscillated through the arm 4 and rod 6 by the lifter cam 8 while the hooped links 13 are pivoted to arms 11 secured to the shaft 3 and a lever 24 pivoted on the nipper shaft 25 carries a bowl 26 engaged by the heart cam 27 and is connected at 23 to the rod 21. When the cylinder combs 28 are in operation, the roller 15 is raised by depression of the bowl 26 and lifting of the arms 12. When the cylinder 19 has rotated to the point at which the front part of the tuft of fibres must be gripped between the roller 15 and the segment 18, the rod 21 is lowered, thus opening the nippers 29 and lowering the roller 15 into contact with the segment 18. In a modification, the bowl 7 is carried at the end of a link adjustably coupled to the arm 4.
