In drafting apparatus comprising feed rollers, an apron unit comprising upper and lower aprons, a porcupine, and drafting rollers, the porcupine is situated between the apron unit and the drafting-rollers. The upper apron is displaceable along the drafting-field towards and away from the porcupine, while the position of the porcupine is adjustable heightwise in relation to the drafting-field to control the extent to which the needles penetrate the material. The porcupine which is replaceable is accordingly mounted on a lever 12, which can be rocked about a pivot 13 when an eccentric cam 14 is rotated about a fixed axis 15 by a handle 16. The handle ends in a pointer movable over a scale graduated according to the thickness of the material. A device to suck up loose fibres is provided, and the position of the feed and drafting rollers relatively to the apron unit, and the relative positions of the two feed rollers may De adjustable.
