Abstract

992,824. Filling and closing bags. CANADIAN INDUSTRIES Ltd. May 7, 1963 [May 14, 1962], No. 17985/63. Heading B8C. In a machine for filling and closing bags 1 the opposed top edges of a filled bag are tensioned into alignment by inserting a pair of pins 4, 5 into the open mouth of the bag to prepare it for closure, e.g. by seaming, stitching, or an adhesive. The machine illustrated comprises a filling hopper 2, closure device 23, and conveyer 3. Pneumatic cylinders 6, 7 carrying the pins 4, 5 are slidable on rods 8, 9 parallel to the conveyer 3 and are urged apart by unequal counterweights 10, 11 acting via cables 18, 19, the cylinder 7 being restrained from motion by the piston 21 of a pneumatic cylinder 22. In operation a bag 1 carried on the conveyer 3 between guides 12 is filled from the hopper before passing beneath the cylinders 6, 7 where it actuates a switch 30, which causes pins 4, 5 to be inserted into the bag mouth and the piston 21 to be withdrawn so that cylinder 7 slides and pin 5 contacts the leading edge of the bag. Further progress of the bag causes its rear edge to contact pin 4 which, with pin 5, tensions the opposed top edges of the bag into alignment under the action of the counterweights 10, 11. As the top edge of the bag is gripped by the intake chain 24 of the closure device 23, the cylinder 6 actuates a switch 31 which causes the pins to be withdrawn from the bag mouth and cylinders 6, 7 to return to their original positions. In modifications the counterweights may be replaced by springs, and the pneumatic cylinders by mechanical devices.
