Abstract

1433235 Filling bags UNION CARBIDE CORP 9 April 1973 [10 April 1972] 16904/73 Heading B8C An irregularly shaped item is packaged in a bag of stretchable plastics film, the bag mouth being stretched by movable plates which are controlled pneumatically, by means which is pre-set, to avoid rupturing the bag film. As shown, turkey 18 to be packaged in a bag 40 is fed with the bag on a conveyer 16 and the mouth of the bag is placed by an operator over plates 24, 26, 28, 30. By means of a foot treadle pneumatic pressure is applied to one side of a cylinder 32 to move the plates 28, 30 away from the plates 24, 26 thereby stretching the mouth of the bag, the pressure in the line 36 to the cylinder being regulated by a valve 38 which may be pre-set to exert a force on the bag not greater than the transverse yield strength of the bag film. The turkey 18 is then passed through a space S into the opened bag, the pressure is reduced and the filled bag is removed from the plates and the mouth closed by a clip. The bag may then be heat shrunk.
