Abstract

978,597. Closing bags. FR. HESSER, MASCHINENFABRIK A.G. Jan. 7, 1963 [Jan. 30, 1962], No. 644/63. Heading B8C. A bag-closing apparatus has means for partially sealing the bags at a folding station prior to transfer to a heat-sealing station. The bags B are carried in pockets 13 of an intermittently movable drum 1, Fig. 2, below detachable appliance carriers 2. One carrier 2, Fig. 3, has folding tools 41, 42 mounted on a head 61 which is lowered by rods 63 to enter tools 42 into the bag; both sets of tools are then moved inwardly to form gussets in the bag. The tools are withdrawn, and the bag partly sealed at the folding station by heat elements 101 carried by another carrier 2. Each heating element carries a cooling element 102 fed with a cooling fluid and which contacts the bag before and after elements 101 to relieve stress in the bag and prevent the spread of heat effects. The elements 102 may have openings through which cooling air is directed on to the bag. The bag is now moved to a sealing station where a pair of heating elements 70 are moved to seal the bag, elements 70 also carrying cooling element. All the movable parts are actuated through levers from cams on driven shafts 3 on carrier 2, the shafts being driven from a central gear-wheel 11 and pinions 12.
