1,164,801. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. JESSETT & HENRY (FOOD MACHINERY) Ltd., and K. E. ILES. 25 Aug., 1966 [25 May, 1965], No. 22024/65. Heading B5K. [Also in Division B8] Apparatus for exhausting and heat sealing filled bags comprises reciprocatable sealing jaws, each bearing two pairs of bag-engaging members slideable away from each other under pressure, and a vacuumizing probe which is positioned between the members prior to sealing. During application of sealing pressure, the movement of the members stretches the bag mouth flat before the seal is completed. Jaws 11, 12 carry the members 20 in opposed pairs, slideable on pins 27 against springs 25. Each member carries bag engaging O-rings 26. A heating element 17 is stretched across the lower jaw 12 between the members and pads 30, 31 are provided to engage the vacuum probe 32. When the latter withdraws, the upper jaw descends and, as the O-rings engage the bag mouth, the members 20 slide outwards to apply stretching forces. Finally, the element 17 makes the seal against a heat resisting strip (18), Fig. 2 (not shown), in the upper jaw.
