988,343. Packaging-machines. SCHWEIZERISCHE INDUSTRIE - GESELLSCHAFT. Nov. 12, 1963 [Nov. 12, 1962 (2)], No. 44535/63. Heading B8C. In a machine in which a web is tubed about a mandrel 1 through which increments of material are fed and enclosed in the tube by transverse seams, the mandrel includes means for applying suction while the transverse sealing jaws are closed, to assist the material in flowing down the mandrel. Suction is applied through an arcuate passage 11 by a pump 9 while the jaws 8 move down with the tube. Lowering of a valve plate 14 connects the pump to atmosphere when the jaws are open. The device is particularly applicable to packaging potato crisps. The apparatus may have in the hopper a rotatable crusher which breaks up any crisps lodging at the top of the mandrel (Fig. 3, not shown).
