Abstract

A lubricating oil composition resistant to heavy bearing pressures comprises a lubricating oil containing 1-5% by weight of a tetrahalogenated butyric acid, and optionally 0.5-0.75% by weight of a sulphurized compound, preferably dibenzyl disulphide or dibenzyl tetrasulphide. The lubricating oil is preferably mineral oil. The tetrahalogenated butyric acid may be the impure acid obtained by (i) reacting acrolein with an alcohol or with ethyl or methyl orthoforinate to give ethyl or methyl diacetyl of acrolein, (ii) reacting the diacetyl with carbon tetrahalide under the action of ultra violet rays, excess tetrahalide being distilled off, (iii) subjecting the product, which is rich in tetrahalogenated diacetal, to oxidizing hydrolysis.
