Abstract
840,744. Moulding cable terminations. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDAR'S CABLES Ltd. Feb. 4, 1958 [Feb. 5, 1957], No. 3961/57. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XXXVI] The end of a plastics insulated cable 2 is sealed against ingress of moisture prior to terminating or jointing by cutting back the sheath to expose the insulated conductors 1, applying an elastically stretched sleeve 3 of an elastomeric material over the sheath near the end, and embedding the thus prepared cable end in a casting of waterproof insulation to which the sleeve adheres. A two-part mould 5 is placed over the sheath end to include the sleeve 3 and part of the exposed conductors. The mould is filled with a cold setting expoxyresin mix which is allowed to set. A releasing agent is incorporated to ensure that the casting shrinks inwards on to the sleeve, which may be of neoprene or polychloroprene, the cable sheath being of P.V.C. About 2 hours at 20‹C are allowed for setting before removal of the mould.
