Abstract

893,828. Electric cable terminations. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. June 17, 1960 [June 17, 1959], No. 20867/59. Class 36. In the manufacture of an electric cable termination, designed to have a very high flashover voltage, the cable insulation 3 and sheath 4 are cut back to reveal appropriate lengths of cable and insulation and encased in a moulded dielectric body formed with a shed or sheds whose outer edges consist of annuli of glazed porcelain 5 embedded in the moulding. For the moulding process, the cut cable is passed through a plurality of annuli 5, a metal cap 6 is placed over the end of the multi-strand cable 2 to ensure that no moisture leaks into the cable, and the whole assembly is placed in a mould 10 having recesses 16 to hold the annuli 5 in position. Epoxy resin is now poured into the mould by channels 18 and 21, until the cap 6 is partly covered, thus sealing the cable. The liquid epoxy resin is allowed to flow freely through the casting by the annular space between the annuli 5 and insulation 3 and through the holes 26 in the annuli. The recesses 16 are so shaped that the tapering edges of the annuli project above the surface of the epoxy resin. A temporary seal of tape 24 is provided to stop escape of the epoxy resin in its molten state. The moulded mass of dielectric may be furnished with a metal collar to serve as a means of support or attachment as described in Specification 893,827.
