Abstract
839,413. Suspension bridges. HEDSTROM, A, May 8, 1958 [May 9, 1957], No. 14812/58. Class 20(1) A load-carrying structure (e.g. a bridge) is braced by cables 2 which are anchored at each end at 3 and 5 and extend continuously over portals 4 to movably engage pulleys 6 which are mounted on transverse beams 7 carying the road. The cables may be fixed at the top of the portals or may engage rollers therein. The roadway is anchored at both ends and is split at either one or both the inner piers and mounted on rollers thereon. Applications to one and two span bridges are described and the invention can be used for strengthening existing bridges.
