Abstract

Concrete bridge units each comprising an arch member and a longitudinal beam spaced apart by members substantially perpendicular to the beam are cast on articulated bearing supports in a substantially vertical position and when set are lowered into final position about the articulated supports. As shown, Fig. 2, a substantially rigid unit comprising the arch member 5, uprights 6, a beam 9 and a tie beam 10 is lowered into its final position by means of a casle 11 about a bearing 3a. In an alternative embodiment the tie beam is omitted and additional cables are secured to the unit at each uprigh. In a further embodiment, Fig. 11, a first unit 25 is cast-and lowered into place and supported either by a cable 26 or a pile 24 while a second unit 27 or 34 respectively is constructed. The joints between the units are subsequently locked. In a steeply arched bridge, Fig. 16, only the central units 46, 47 are constructed according to the invention, longitudinal beams 57 being continued outwardly to piles 40 to form a roadway supported on arch portion 41, 42 by means of vertical members (not shown).
