To avoid drop stitches in the heel or toe suture of hosiery produced on a circular machine, movable auxiliary cams 17, 18 are associated with the centre stitch cam 50 of a two feeder machine and are introduced at the commencement of reciprocatory two-feed knitting. As a result, the needles and particularly the leading needles in each direction of reciprocation are prematurely, but only partially, lowered so that the ties of their open latches are just above loops of the previous course. This ensures that the latches of the leading needles do not pass above the yarn as it swings from one corner of the throat plate 560 to the other when the angle of yarn being fed to the needles changes. The effect of the cams 17, 18 is always in relation to the leading feed and to ensure that the needles take the yarn at the following feed whilst that yarn is swinging from one corner of its throat plate to the other, a clearing cam 28, 29 is placed in advance of the following feed but only clears the needles sufficiently such that the tips of their latches are just above the loops of the previous course. The full draw of the needles is completed by the usual centre stitch cam 50 and the stitch cams 360, 361 on either side of it. Specifications 628,526 and 704,843 are referred to.
