In a shell-type boiler having a travelling grate supplied with air from an inlet 6 between the runs of the grate, a hole is formed in a plate 10 sealing the top of an ash pit 11 extending below the grate, so that air leaking past the seals between the runs of the grate flows through the return run of the grate to the ash pit, thus removing dust and ashes from the grate.
