Abstract

831,154. Tea rolling. SAYAMA TEA ESTATES Ltd., and WORTHINGTON, W. R. March 25, 1958 [March 29, 1957], No. 10304/57. Class 129. Tea leaf is treated in apparatus comprising means close to a large diameter roller to provide a nip for tea leaf carried between them as the roller is rotated, the means or the roller or both being vibrated. As shown, the leaf is nipped between two cylindrical metallic rollers 1, 2 of substantially the same diameter mounted on substantially parallel shafts carried in pairs of bearings 3, 4. Bearings 4 are secured to a frame member and bearings 3 are adjustably secured to a frame member 7 to allow adjustment of gap 8. The rollers are driven at substantially the same speed in the directions of arrows B, C. Frame member 7 is vibrated in a horizontal plane perpendicular to shaft 5, e.g. by an eccentric 9 joined to the frame member by an arm 10. Tea leaf is loaded into a hopper 11 which deposits it on a conveyer 12 which feeds it between rollers 1, 2 after which it falls into a receptacle or on to a conveyer. Scrapers 13 remove any tea leaf clinging to the rollers. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), roller 1 is replaced by an anvil vibrated by an eccentric and having a recess which fits the outside of roller 2.
