Abstract

Feeding articles from hoppers. -In machines for feeding cigarettes and like articles from a hopper 1 of the kind comprising a roller 6 or an endless travelling band which delivers the cigarettes one at a time through a gap formed by its upper surface and the oppositely moving surface of a clearance device consisting of discs 9 or rollers, the cigarettes in the region of the gap are supported clear of the surface of the feeding device by surfaces 19 projecting beyond it and spaced from the surface of the clearance device a distance slightly greater than the diameter of the cigarettes being dealt with, for the purpose of freeing the cigarettes from the action of t'he feeding device while being driven backwards bv the clearance device so as to minimize risk of damage. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the surfaces 19 are provided on strips 20 lying in grooves in the feed roller 6 and either rigidly fixed in position or hinged so as to be vibrated by suitable means such as rotary cams. Cam wheels 16 with projections 17 may be mounted on the shaft 10 of the clearance devices so as to act as agitating means. A secondary clearance device 22 may be provided and be driven bv suitable gearing from the shaft of the feed roller. In a modification, the surfaces 19 may be in the form of rollers carried by fixed or oscillating arms and disposed between a series of drums or pulleys forming the feed roller. Fig. 5 shows the application of the invention t'o an endless-band feeding device 6<b> driven by a roller 32. The supporting surfaces are in the form of rollers 19<a> mounted on stub axles carried by the frame at each side of the band.
