Cigarette-making machines. - Spreading and stripping rollers and like devices are divided axially, the divided portions being actuated with a definite phase difference. Arms 9, Fig. 2, are loosely mounted about a shaft 8 and carry a multiple crank shaft 10 driven from the shaft 8 by chain gearing. Each crank pin serves as a bearing for one of the picker rods 14, the stems of the rods working in slots formed in a bar 15 located in bearings 16. The arms may be raised or lowered, and are secured in position by bolts which pass through an extension in each rod into a slot in the framework. In a modification, a stripping roller is constructed in four sections. A central shaft 44, Fig. 4, is surrounded by two hollow shafts 42, 43 to which are pinned the two roller sections 39, 40. The two outermost sections 38, 41 are integral with sleeves 65, 66. On the frame 47 are mounted two further shafts 48, 49, each carrying two eccentrically mounted pawls 50 - - 53 in engagement with ratchet, wheels 59 - - 62. The wheels 59, 60 are fast on the hollow shafts 42, 43 and drive the sections 39, 40 intermittently, while the sections 38, 41 are moved by the inner ratchet wheels 61, 62. These stripping wheels are mounted in duplicate in a single container or hopper having a central oscillating screen, whereby the tobacco is pressed to the duplicate spreading devices alternately, and is fed thereby to a single conveyer belt beneath the container.
