Abstract

267,765. Grupe, W. F. June 7, 1926. Cigarette-making machines.-Tobacco is fed by a conveyer 114 into a hopper 2 containing a a number of carding mechanisms. The lower wheels 6, 17 of these mechanisms are continuously driven from a main shaft, and the upper wheels are intermittently driven through ratchet gearing. Pin wheels 12, 22 and paddle wheels 14, 25 rotating as indicated and also driven by sprocket and chain from a main shaft are associated with each pair of carding wheels, and instead of the arcuate plates 27, 28 shown in Fig. 1, further pin wheels or corrugated rolls may be placed between the carding wheels and the base of the casing, thereby promoting the thorough agitation of the contents of the hopper. The streams of tobacco are conveyed bv belts 32, 33 to chutes 34, 35 containing paper strips which are fed on to the tube belts 36, 37; thence passing to the encasing mechanism for forming the cigarette rod, and to the cutting-off mechanism. Separate cutting-off devices for each rod, or a single common cutting-off device, may be fitted. Speed adjustment of the carding mechanism is obtainable by moving the crossed-belts by which countershafts are driven from the main shaft. The belt forks 74, 75 are mounted on threaded spindles 70, 71 integral with worm wheels 76, 81 in gear with wheels 77, 82. A handle 80 is used' for adjusting the belts, and clutches 79, 84 may be disengaged to permit the adjustment of one 'belt without the other. The lower end of the conveyer belt 114 is movable about the point 118 to facilitate the taking up of the tobacco from the basket or hamper. Each bucket 113 is provided with projecting teeth 121.
