Abstract

828,188. Electrophotographic development. BRUNING CO. Inc., C. Jan. 7, 1958 [Jan. 18, 1957], No. 662/58. Class 98(2) An electrostatic latent image on a photoconductive layer 45 is developed by passing it over a magnetic cylinder 13 rotating in a mixture of magnetizable particles and developer powder. The layer 45 may be fed by rollers 46, 47 having their surfaces of nap or pile material, and it may be agitated against the cylinder 13 by polygonal rollers 48, 49. The cylinder 13 may be composed of disc-shaped magnets 14 each magnetized through its thickness so that each face is of opposite polarity, and arranged between disc-shaped pole pieces 16 with like poles of adjacent magnets facing each other. The pole pieces are thus alternately N. and S. and the magnetic flux lines extend throughout the periphery of the cylinder. The developer mixture 21 is contained in a trough 11 extending longitudinally beneath the magnetic cylinder. It is fed continuously to the trough through opening 24 by a screw feed 26 from a storage bin 28, and continuously removed from the trough through openings 31, 32, and returned to the bin 28 by a screw feed 33. The mixture is agitated in the bin by rotating blades 38, which also urge it towards the screw feed 26.
