Abstract
A feedstock comprising non-aromatic hydrocarbons is reformed by treating at 450-580 DEG C. and not more than 50 p.s.i.g. with a catalyst comprising the oxides of cobalt and molybdenum, which may be in combined form, on alumina in the absence of added hydrogen whether extraneous or recycled. The feed may be in the gasoline or naphtha range, e.g. C5-C7 hydrocarbons such as a straight-run distillate or a catalytic reformate particularly a light reformate or raffinate from a solvent extraction of a reformate. The catalyst preferably contains 1.5-5% cobalt oxide and 5-25% molybdena and space velocities of 0.1-1 vol./vol./hr. are used. In a typical example a lower-boiling fraction (end point 108 DEG C.) of a platinum reformate is up-graded from a research octane number of 76.1 by treatment at atmospheric pressure and a space velocity of 0.2 vol./vol./hr. using as catalyst (a) 2.9% cobalt oxide, 14.1% molybdena on alumina at 530 DEG C. to give 48 weight per cent yield of a product of octane number 106.3, (b) the same catalyst at 475 DEG C. to give a product of octane number 93.6 at a yield of 68%, and (c) the same catalyst containing 3.4% fluorine to give 58% of a product of octane number 93.7.
