Abstract
A concentrate rich in polycyclic naphthenes, particularly decalin, is obtained by catalytically reforming a petroleum fraction having an end point of about 500 DEG F., separating the product into fractions boiling below and above 400 DEG F, and catalytically hydrogenating the higher boiling fraction to effect saturation. The feed may have an initial boiling point of 200 DEG F. if a gasoline product is also required or of 400 DEG F., and is reformed at 600 DEG -1000 DEG F., 50-1000 p.s.i., an LHSV of 0,1-10 and a hydrogen to hydrocarbon mol. ratio of 0,5-20 using a catalyst p comprising platinum or an oxide of chromium, molybdenum, tungsten or vanadium. The 400 DEG F. + product is hydrogenated over a similar catalyst, particularly a platinum catalyst, at 300 DEG -900 DEG F., 100-5000 p.s.i.g., an LHSV of 0,1-20 with 2,500-25,000 SCF hydrogen per barrel. The product may be used as a jet fuel or as a solvent.
