Abstract
Gasoline which contains paraffins and naphthenes is reformed in the presence of hydrogen by a reaction which includes dehydrogenation of naphthenes and dehydrocyclization and hydrocracking of paraffins, separating the normally gaseous reaction products from the normally liquid reformed product, subjecting the latter to an extraction treatment and therein separating the same into a raffinate poor in aromatic hydrocarbons and into an extract rich in aromatic hydrocarbons, subjecting the raffinate to fractional distillation and therein separating a low-boiling fraction comprising isohexanes from a higher boiling raffinate fraction containing normal hexane, and returning the higher boiling raffinate fraction to the reforming zone and subjecting it to the catalysed reforming reaction in admixture with the fresh gasoline charge. The reforming catalyst is preferably a platinum-alumina-silica catalyst of the type described in U.S.A. Specification 2,478,916 or a similar catalyst modified with a halogen as described in Specification 657,565. Other catalysts such as molybdena-alumina, chromia-alumina and platinum on a cracking catalyst base may be used. The reforming may be effected at 316-538 DEG C., at pressures within the range of 3.4 to 68 atmospheres and a weight hourly space velocity of 0.5 to 20. The hydrogen present may be in the range of 0.5 to 20 mols. of hydrogen per mol. of hydrocarbon. A preferred solvent for the extraction step is a mixture of water and a hydrophilic organic solvent such as alcohol, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, tripropylene glycol and sulphur dioxide.
