Abstract

High octane-number gasoline is obtained by subjecting a hydrocarbon boiling within the gasoline range containing paraffins of at least 6 carbon atoms per molecule and a low aromatic hydrocarbon content to a catalysed reforming reaction in the presence of hydrogen, separating the normally liquid reformed products and subjecting them to fractional distillation, separating a light product fraction boiling below normal hexane from the higher boiling product, subjecting the latter to an extraction treatment to obtain a raffinate poor in aromatic hydrocarbons from an extract rich in aromatic hydrocarbons, returning at least a major portion of the raffinate to the reforming zone, and commingling at least a portion of the light product with the extract to form a high octane number gasoline. The starting material may be a straight run gasoline or natural gasoline preferably having a boiling range between 10 DEG and 218 DEG C. The catalyst may be a platinum-alumina-silica catalyst of the type described in U.S.A. Specification 2,478,916 or the platinum-alumina-combined halogen catalyst described in Specification 657,565, [Group IV (a)]. The preferred solvent is a mixture of water and a hydrophilic organic solvent, such as alcohol, glycols and aldehydes, in particular diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, dipropylene glycol and tripropylene glycol in admixture with 2 to 30 per cent of water.ALSO:High octane-number gasoline is obtained by subjecting a hydrocarbon boiling within the gasoline range containing paraffins of at least 6 carbon atoms per molecule and a low aromatic hydrocarbon content to a catalysed reforming reaction in the presence of hydrogen, separating the normally liquid reformed products and subjecting them to fractional distillation, separating a light product fraction boiling below normal hexane from the higher boiling product, subjecting the latter to an extraction treatment to obtain a raffinate poor in aromatic hydrocarbons from an extract rich in aromatic hydrocarbons, returning at least a major portion of the raffinate to the reforming zone, and commingling at least a portion of the light product with the extract to form a high octane-number gasoline.
