Abstract
A mixture of liquid hydrocarbons suitable for use as an aviation fuel component, is obtained by separating a fraction having an initial boiling point of 65 DEG to 85 DEG C. and a final boiling point of 130-140 DEG C. from a naphthenic straight-run gasoline, catalytically reforming the fraction and removing from the reformate by fractional distillation, a fraction boiling between 85 DEG and 105 DEG C. consisting principally of C7 paraffins. In an example, a gasoline fraction boiling between 65 DEG and 135 DEG C. was separated from a naphthenic gasoline by fractional distillation. This fraction which contained about 51 per cent by weight of naphthenes was passed over a commercial platforming catalyst at a rate of 2.1 litres per litre of catalyst per hour together with a recycle gas containing 95 per cent by volume of hydrogen per mol. of gasoline fraction, at elevated temperature, and at a pressure of 26 atmospheres. After stabilizing the platformate, it was then split in a column into a fraction boiling above 105 DEG C. and a lighter top product which was then split into a product boiling up to 85 DEG C. and the two fractions blended, optionally with the addition of an alkylate prepared from isobutane and a mixture of butenes and pentenes.
