Abstract

The aromatisation or reforming of nonaromatic hydrocarbons is effected at 450 DEG -580 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst comprising chromium and ferric oxides on a support, preferably alumina, the amount of iron being equivalent to less than 25% mol of ferric oxide per total ferric and chromic oxides; a potassium oxide promoter may also be present. The chromium oxide may form 5-25% by weight of the catalyst and potassium oxide 0,1-5%. The formation of iron chromite should be avoided. The reaction may be effected at below 50 p.s.i.g. including subatmospheric pressure, in the absence of added or recycle hydrogen at a space velocity of 0,1-1 vol./vol./hr. The feedstock may be a straight run gasoline with an end point of 80-120 DEG C. or a platinum reformate or fraction thereof, e.g. a relatively aromatic free fraction boiling below 125 DEG C or the raffinate from a solvent extraction, untreated fractions being recombined afterwards.ALSO:A reforming catalyst comprises chromium and ferric oxides on a support, preferably alumina, the amount of iron being equivalent to less than 25% mol. of ferric oxide per total ferric and chromic oxides; potassium oxide may also be present as a promoter. The supported catalyst may contain 5-25% by weight of chromium oxide and 0.1-5% of potassium oxide.
