Abstract
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, particularly naphthalene, are obtained by subjecting to reforming a liquid hydrocarbon charge containing hydrocarbons boiling above the normal gasoline boiling range (21-204 DEG C.) in the presence of hydrogen and fluoride-free catalyst containing a refractory inorganic oxide, 0.01-5% by wt. of a platinum group metal and 0.75-1.5% by wt. of combined chlorine at superatmospheric pressure, e.g. 30-100 atmospheres, 454-566 DEG C. and an L.H.S.V. of 0.1-10 to produce hydrocarbons boiling below the initial boiling-point of the feed and a net volumetric yield of polynuclear alkyl aromatic hydrocarbons, separating a fraction containing such hydrocarbons and subjecting it to dealkylation. The feed may be a naphtha (93-232 DEG C.), a heavy naphtha (177-246 DEG C.), a kerosene (177-274 DEG C.) or a light or heavy gas oil. Dealkylation may be effected thermally or catalytically, preferably in the presence of hydrogen and a supported platinum group metal and/or oxide of vanadium, manganese, molybdenum, tungsten or, preferably, chromium, at 540-820 DEG C. and 20-68 atmospheres, and an L.H.S.V. of 0.1-10. Unconverted alkyl naphthalenes may be recycled.
