Abstract

Hydrogen and oxides of carbon are obtained by a steam reforming process in which a normally liquid hydrocarbon is admixed with the quantity of water required to give a mixture of a specified composition, emulsifying the mixture and then passing it continuously to a vaporization zone and then over a steam reforming catalyst. In an example, a petroleum fraction of boiling range 30 DEG -180 DEG C. is intimately mixed with 7 times its weight of water, emulsified and pumped to a mono-tube boiler and pre-heated to 400 DEG C., and then passed over a catalyst which may be nickel.
