Abstract

The molecular fission of hydrocarbons is effected over a catalyst comprising a major proportion of alumina, a minor proportion of platinum and at least 36% of combined fluorine. The dealkylation of alkyl-substituted aromatic hydrocarbons is effected in the presence of 0,5-4 mols of hydrogen per mol of hydrocarbon at at least 520 DEG C. and a flow rate of up to 5 vol./vol./hr. using a catalyst containing 0,01-1% of platinum and 6-8% of fluorine. Hydrocarbon mixtures can be treated such as petroleum distillates having an initial boiling point of at least 150 DEG C. and containing at least 50% by weight aromatics, e.g. a kerosine or solvent extracted kerosine.
