Abstract
Benzene is obtained by the conversion at elevated temperature and pressure of cyclohexane and/or methyl cyclopentane in the presence of a non - siliceous catalyst containing alumina, fluorine and a platinum group metal and having a surface area of 75-150 square metres per gram. Alumina having a greater surface area is steamed before compositing with the metal. Preferred conditions are 320-540 DEG C., 3-40 atmospheres, a hydrogen to hydrocarbon mol. ratio of 0.5-20 and a space velocity of 0.5-20 wt./wt./hr. The change may be pure hydrocarbon or a fraction from a petroleum source, e.g. boiling in the range 66-85 DEG C.
