Abstract
Catalytic reformates are upgraded by treatment at 450-580 DEG C and not more than 50 p.s.i.g. with a catalyst of chromium oxide on a zinc aluminate support of formula ZnAl2O4, there being no addition of hydrogen whether extraneous or recycled. The catalyst is preferably promoted by a rare earth and an alkali metal each preferably present as the oxide and may contain 5-25% chromium oxide, 0.1-5% rare earth oxide, the promoters, for example, being potassium and cerium. Space velocities of 0.1-1.0 vol./vol./hr. are preferred. The higher boiling end of a catalytic reformate which is not susceptible to further upgrading may be removed by distillation and only a lower boiling fraction, e.g. a substantial proportion of which boils below 100 DEG C. is treated. Alternatively, a raffinate from a solvent extraction only may be treated. In an example, a fraction boiling up to 108 DEG C. and research octane number 76.1 of a platinum reformate is treated at atmospheric pressure, 0.2 vol./vol./hr. and 530 DEG C. over a catalyst of 10% chromia, 1% ceria and 1% potassium oxide on zinc aluminate to give in 65 weight % yield a product of research octane number 99.2.
