822,078. Engine braking. HALLER, R. March 4, 1957 [March 2, 1956], No. 7171/57. Class 7(6) A brake valve which, during engine braking, opens at a predetermined cylinder pressure to permit the escape of the compressed charge comprises a valve 10 connected to a spring-loaded piston 8 with a larger working face exposed to the pressure of the escaping gas than that of the valve 10, which piston holds the valve 10 open until the pressure in the cylinder has dropped to a value below that necessary to force valve 10 off its seat 4. During normal running a remotely operated eccentric 19 forces a spring abutment 16 down to increase the load of spring 17 so that the. valve 10 remains closed. For braking the abutment 16 is released so that valve 10 opens at a predetermined compression pressure, the pressure of the escaping gas immediately forcing piston 8 upwards to open escape ports 7 and holding it raised so that valve 10 recloses at a lower pressure than its opening pressure. In a modification the piston 8 is replaced by a membrane loaded by springs or fluid pressure.
