Abstract
1534480 I.C. engine combustion chambers and air cells A MOIROUX 6 April 1977 14485/77 Heading F1B In an I.C. engine, combustion air is compressed by a piston 2 to pass from a combustion chamber 8 to an accumulation chamber 9 when a valve 12 is opened from late in the compression stroke to early in the combustion stroke. In Fig. 2 the valve 12 is opened and closed by an hydraulic device including a piston/ram 15 actuated by hydraulic pulses supplied via channels 19 and 20 opening being 20 degrees before TDC and closing being 30 degrees after TDC. It is stated that combustion occurs at substantially constant pressure because of the presence of chamber 9. In Fig. 3 (not shown) opening of valve (23) is caused by the pressure in combustion chamber 8 acting on the valve and overcoming the force due to pressure in a chamber (25) isolated from the chamber 9. The same accumulator (26) may serve several cylinders, Fig. 4 (not shown).
