Abstract

The brake has an oval shaped damper (2) pivoting about a shaft (2a) in the exhaust pipe (1). The shaft is displaced a small amount (e) from the centre line of the exhaust pipe and the damper closes the pipe completely when it is at an angle to the cross sectional plane of the pipe. It is closed by a lever from a spring loaded piston (4) in a hydraulic cylinder (5) to which oil is admitted from the engine auxiliary systems through a reducing valve (6). When the pressure of the exhaust gas coming from the engine (A) rises sufficiently it can open the damper against the hydraulic force and thus prevent the build up of excessive back pressures which could damage the engine.
