832,125. Valve gear. ANCIENS ETABLISSEMENTS PANHARD & LEVASSOR S. A., DES. Dec. 5, 1957 [Dec. 19, 1956], No. 37920/57. Class 7(6) A hydraulic clearance adjuster 11 comprises a piston 30, Fig. 2, with non-return valve 31 dividing a pressure chamber B from a supply chamber A, and elastic means acting upon a movable member 32 closing the'end of chamber B and creating a pressure which acts upon an effective area of the piston equal to that of the piston rod 30a to urge it in the direction to take up valve clearance. As shown, the valve rocker 1, Fig. 1, of an overhead valve engine is mounted on a movable fulcrum 4, which is adjusted to take up valve clearance by the hydraulic adjuster 11, The fulcrum 4 is slidably supported on a bolt 5 screwed to the cylinder head 6 and bears against a lever 7 pivoted at one end on an adjustable screw 9 and resting at the other end on the piston rod 30a, Fig. 2. The reservoir A is closed by a stationary sealed plug 27 and the space C is filled with nitrogen under pressure. The non-return valve 31 comprises a split ring, Fig. 2a, the split 31c in which permits a predetermined small leakage from the pressure space B to the supply space A when the lever 7 is under load during operation of the rocker. Upward movement of piston 30 is resisted by the pressure in space B, the non-return valve being closed, but if clearance develops in the valve gear piston 30 is forced down due to the differential action on the piston of the pressures in spaces B and A set up by the gas formed in space C. In a modification, the gas pressure in space C is replaced by a leaf spring and in Fig. 4 the pressure in space B is developed by a spring-loaded plunger 37 urged into space B.
