Abstract

753,092. Hydraulic shock-absorbers. FORD MOTOR CO., Ltd. July 9, 1954 [July 21, 1953], No. 20176/54. Class 108 (3). A direct-acting shock-absorber for a motor vehicle, comprises a piston C operable in a cylinder A having a fluid escape passage 46 adjacent which is a resilient member 81 engageable by the piston C to close the passage 46 and trap a body of fluid in the cylinder. The piston has peripheral liquid-flow grooves 43. The passage 46 is controlled by a spring- loaded valve 44 and leads to a recuperation chamber B. The upper end of the passage 46 opens into a countersunk portion 87 defined by a peripheral rib 86. An inclined further rib 88, surrounds the passage 46. In operation, on compression, the lower face of the piston engages the upper face of the member 81 as shown, and further piston movement results in the rib 88 sealing off the passage 46. Further movement still, results in a rib 83 at the upper end of the member 81 closing the lower ends of the piston grooves 43. The rib 88 may be dispensed with, in which case, the member 81 is distorted so that the base of the countersunk portion 87 closes off the passage 46. In a further modification, the axial length of the rib 83 is greater, so that the grooves 43 are closed before the passage 46. The rib 83 may, however, be dispensed with. The piston C may have a rebound valve (not shown) controlled by a temperature-responsive device as described in Specification 753,049. Flow of oil through the rebound valve takes place through a series of radial passages in the piston-rod.
