Abstract
821,805. Ventilation. CARRIER ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Feb. 20, 1958 [March 1, 1957], No. 5616/58. Class 137 A room conditioning unit comprises a casing having an inlet, an outlet, and a plenum connected to a supply of primary air, nozzles to discharge primary air from the plenum and induce secondary air from the inlet so placed that the primary air stream has a path longer than the minimum distance between the nozzles and the outlet, the volume of secondary air being proportional to the length of the primary air stream, and the mixture of primary and secondary air being discharged through the outlet. As shown, a casing 2 has an inlet 3, an outlet 4, and a plenum 5 supplied by a pipe 6 from a central air conditioning system and having nozzles 9 for the discharge of air. The nozzles 9 may be arranged in a cluster in a circle the direction of each air stream being tangential to the circle and at an acute angle to the base plate on which they are supported to produce a primary air stream in the form of a tapered helix. Secondary air is induced through the inlet 3, over a heater (or cooler) 10 comprising pipes 12 and fins 11 which may have a trapesoidal form, and, after mixing with the primary air, is discharged through the outlet 4, a baffle 14 ensuring that some of the air is discharged away from an outside wall or window. More than one cluster of nozzles may be provided, the direction of swirl being opposite in adjacent clusters and the direction of the air streams from the clusters may be at an angle to the horizontal, Fig. 7 (not shown). Baffles may be employed to separate and constrain the air stream from each cluster, or the streams may be close together and act as mutual baffles. Specification 641,712 is referred to.
