Abstract

751,346. Enamelling &c. furnaces. FERRO CORPORATION. Nov. 4, 1954 [Feb. 26, 1954], No. 31914/54. Class 51(2). A device for screening the slot 35 in the roof of an enamelling furnace through which depend the ware supporting rods 37 comprises a series of air discharge pipes 17 formed with horizontal slots 18 extending along one side of the roof slot 35 and blowing a thin curtain of air into slightly larger slots 21 in return pipes 20 disposed on the other side of the roof slot. The air is blown across at sufficient velocity to prevent the passage of dust, scale &c. onto the ware carried by the rods 37. The screening air passes successively from a motor driven fan 10 through a distribution box 12, headers 13, branch pipes 14, secondary headers 15 and branch pipes 16 leading to the discharge pipes 17. Air from the return pipes 20 passes through branches 20a, headers 23, branch pipes 24 and a main header 25 feeding a return box 27 provided with a return connection 28 to the fan and a damper-controlled fresh air inlet 29. A baffle plate 22 is disposed over the return pipes 20 to create turbulence in any air which escapes recirculation. Dampers 19 are provided in the branch pipes 14 and dampers 26 in the return branch pipes 24. The returned air may be filtered. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the air screen discharges against a baffle plate without recirculation to the fan.
