Abstract

764,108. Ventilation. CARRIER ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. Jan. 6, 1955 [May 26, 1954], No. 461/55: Class 137 An air conditioning unit 2 for placing beneath a window of a. room comprises a base unit 3 having a casing 4 with an inlet 5 and an outlet 6, a plenum chamber 7 which is supplied from a central source with primary air at high velocity and high static pressure, and a coil 8 which is mounted at the front of the unit 3 and is connected to a central station to permit hot, or cold, water to be passed therethrough,.an inducer member 9 being placed rearwardly of the coil 8 above the plenum chamber 7. The upper wall of the plenum chamber has a number of spaced groups of nozzles 11 formed therein, the inducer member, preferably formed from a: back support 17 and a bent metal sheet, being formed with a number of vertical converging passages 12 each of which is positioned above a corresponding group of nozzles 11. The support 17 is adjustably securable to the structure of the base unit by means of hooks 18 so that the distance of the inlets 14 of the passages 12 above the nozzles 11 may be varied. In use a stream of conditioned primary air is supplied from a central station to the plenum chamber 7 and is discharged through the nozzles 11 to create low pressure at the area of the nozzles and induce secondary air from the room into the unit through the inlet 5 and over the lower portion of the coil 8 for mixing at the low pressure area with the primary air. The mixed air enters the inducer 9 and is accelerated within the passage ways 12, air discharged therefrom causing secondary low pressure areas around the passage way outlets 15 to induce additional room air into the unit through the upper part of the coil 8 and cause a second mix. The mixed air streams are then discharged into the room through the outlet 6. The flow of hot, or cold, water through the coil 8 may be varied to adjust the sensible heat of the induced room air.
