Abstract

809,904. Air conditioning. CARRIER ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Oct. 30, 1956 [Jan. 13, 1956(3)], No. 33140/56. Class 137. An air conditioning system for multiroom buildings of the type which supplies conditioned air through narrow conduits at high velocity to a number of induction type units 13 all positioned in the same area to be conditioned comprises a central station 2 which is disposed, e.g. in a basement of the building, and has a fan 4 in its casing 3 for forcing conditioned air, at high velocity, through a riser 5 to run-out pipes 12 each of which supplies a number of induction type units 13 arranged in series in one bay of the building. Each unit 13, having a base unit 50 formed of a back plate 59, a wrapper 60, and end panels 61, has a plenum member 55 with an upper chamber 56 which is connected to the source of primary air, and communicates, through an opening 66 controlled by a damper plate 67 with a lower static pressure chamber 57 which is provided with a number of discharge nozzle members 75. Primary conditioned air, discharged from openings 76 in the nozzles 75, induces room air into the unit 13, the proportion of room air by-passing a heat exchanger 15, supported at an angle by end plates 88 beneath the plenum chamber 57, being regulated by a pair of dampers 80, 82, which are linked by a rod 84, and pivoted at 81, 83 respectively adjacent the lower and upper edges of the heat exchanger. The dampers are movable by a handle 85, attached to the damper 80, to proportion the flow of room air entering the unit either through an opening 86 in a cover 90 or through an opening 52 for passage over the heat exchanger 15. The damper plate 67 is mounted on rods 68 journalled in tabs 69 formed in a plate 65 dividing the two chambers 56, 57, and is connected by a linkage 70 to a control 71, rotation of which oscillates the plate 67 toward, or away from, the opening 66 in the plate 65. The plate 67 carries a sealing member 72, made, e.g. of sponge rubber. The central station 2 has a number of louvres 6 through which exterior fresh air is drawn into the casing 3 to pass successively through a filter 7, a preheating coil 8 supplied, e.g. with steam, sprays 9, a cooling coil 10, and a reheating coil 11. A pump 17 urges water through a line 18 to a cooler 16, forming e.g. part of a refrigeration system, and through lines 19, 20, to the cooling coil 10, return lines 21, 22 leading the water back to the pump 17. The pump 17 also aids in the supply of cold water to the heat exchangers 15 in the room units 13, the water being passed through lines 19, 26 and a three-way valve 27 to a secondary pump 28 which further urges the cool water through lines 29, 30 to the heat exchangers 15. The water is returned to the cooler 16 by way of lines 31, 33, 22, pump 17 and line 18. When it is desired to supply hot water to the heat exchange members 15 the valve 27 is turned to close the line 26 and open a line 34 connecting a heater 35 with the pump 28. The heat exchangers 15 may each consist of one section in the supply line and another section arranged in the return line, of the heating or cooling liquid, each section comprising two or more parallel pipes. Alternatively, each heat exchanger 15 may be composed of a number of parallel pipes connected between inlet and outlet headers. Specifications 641,712, 809,903 and 809,905 are referred to.
