Abstract

821,257. Writing instruments. PAPER MATE MANUFACTURING CO. Oct. 2, 1956 [Oct. 3, 1955], No. 29973/56. Class 146(3) An ink supply unit for use in a writing instrument e.g. a retractable ball-point pen, comprises two tubular ink cartridges 20, 22 each provided with a writing tip .at one end and an open end, and connecting means at the open end of one cartridge receiving and holding the writing tip of the other cartridge while leaving an air passage between said open end and the atmosphere. A tubular connector device 40 is formed in one piece of a resilient plastic material e.g. moulded polyethylene resin. The external shape of the connector is such that it can be wedged in the open end 24 of one of the units and the internal shape is such that the writing tip 26 of the other unit may be wedged therein. The interior surface is fluted to provide air ducts which co-operate with channels 56 formed radially in the stop flange 48 of the connector to supply air to the upper surface 54 of the ink in the unit 22. The relative positions of the units 20, 22 can be changed e.g. if one of the writing points becomes inoperative, and the units may contain ink of different colours.
