To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALVIN O. RINGQUIS-T, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fitchburg, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Reversible Wrench, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a wrench adapt ed for convenient progressive operation in either direction and particularly designed for operations in relatively inaccessible places, such as the removal of nuts from connecting rod bolts in certain automobile engines.
It is the object of my invention to provide a wrench in which the head may be progressively advanced in either direction by intermittent, repeated movements of the handle and in which the head may be turned in either direction as desired without adjustment or resetting of any part of the mechanism.
To the attainment of this object, I have provided a Wrench having very few and simple parts and which may be cheaply manu factured and easily assembled.
My invention further relates to arrangements and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
A preferred form of the invention i shown in the drawings in whicha Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the wrench with the operating parts shown in section;
Figs. 2 and 3 are elevations of the opposite ends of the wrench head; and
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the wrench.
Referring to the drawings, I have shown a reversible wrench comprising a handle 10, a base or body 11 and a head 12 mounted for free rotation relative to the base 11. The handle 10 is formed with an offset construction, to render the wrench better adapted for particularly inaccessible places. A stud 13 is mounted in the base 11 V and may be formed integral therewith. The stud 13 is provided with a groove or recess 14 and with an end flange 15.
The wrench head 12 is loosely pivoted upon the stud 13 and is held from displacement by a pin 16 projecting into the groove 14. The pin, however, is of much less dipermits a limited sliding movement of the head 12 on the stud 13. 1
Clutch teeth 17 and 18 are formed on the adjacent faces of the base 11 and head 12 ameter than the width'of the groove and and these teeth in the preferred form are of spring being disposed in suitable recesses in the parts 11 and 12. The spring 19 acts to yieldingly separate the teeth 17 and 18, so that the head 12 is normally free to turn on the stud 13.- 1
A hole 21 is formed in the head 12 opposite the pin 16 and a corresponding hole is formed in the stud 13 so that a pin or wire may be inserted todrive out the pin 16, if it is desired to separate the parts. The outer end of the head 12 is formed to fit any de sired size or styleof nut or bolt head.
In using my improved wrench, the spring.
19 normally holds the parts separated, so
that the handle may be moved freely relatively to the head. The handle being thus freely swung to one extreme or the other of its path of movement, pressure is applied to overcomethe spring 19 and cause the teeth 17 and 18 to engage. The handle can then be swung in the opposite direction to move the head 12 angularly for a desired angular distance. When pressure on the handle is released, the parts will immediately separate, freeing the handle for. the return movement.
It thus appears that the. wrench may be made ready for turning a nut in either dir'ection by simply placing the parts in the desired relation and pressing the base 11 against the head-12. My improved wrench is extremely simple in construction but is nevertheless fully adapted for the purposes described and contains no delicate parts or fine adjustments which would be liable to breakage or displacement.
Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, I do not wish'to be limited to the details herein disclosed otherwise than as set forth in the claim, but what I claim is A reversible wrench comprising a handle,
