820,734. Catamenial appliances. JOHNSON, R. W., MORTIMER, R. J., and ASHTON, W. H. Jan. 18, 1956 [Jan. 18, 1955], No. 1763/56. Class 81 (2). A sanitary napkin is moulded to a curved shape to conform to the shape of the body, so that no creasing occurs in use, and it is stabilized to retain its shape. The absorbent insert 10, Fig. 3, is preferably flat and wide at the front, Fig. 4, fairly thick at the mid-point, Fig. 5, and of reduced width and thickness at the rear, Fig. 6, the whole pad being of tapering width from front to rear and curved longitudinally to follow the body line. The form of the pad may be made by compressing a rectangular block of absorbent material into a mould, to which heat is applied so that thermoplastic fibres incorporated in the pad maintain the form of the pad after it has been removed from the mould. Instead of using a proportion of thermoplastic fibres in the pad a thermoplastic resin may be sprayed on to the fibres during the formation of the pads, or, in a further modification, a laminated pad may be made from alternate layers of cotton and thermoplastic fibres.
